New Seagate external hdd. When it loads, the disk is unwritable; you have a choice of a Mac executable or a Windows executable. I click on the Mac executable and it tries to connect to Baidu and Google. Things I don't think are necessary: Baidu (and, invariably, the CPC) and Google (and, invariably, the CIA) knowing I am formatting an external hard drive for the first time.Let's just fire up Disk Utility and format the thing.

@lukewrites What happens in Linux? If it's hardware that can't just be hardware, you should probably return it for a refund, because that's FUBAR. Also, there are legit uses for hardware that never touches the internet, I'm sure Google and Baidu know that.

@aven @lukewrites I remember removing a WD MyBook from an enclosure and noticed it was unreadable. The enclosure had an AES encryption chip that encrypted everything (even if you didn't set a password , plus it did the 4k sector thing so it could work with 32-bit OSes). After that I never purchased a drive with enclosure again. I always purchased them separately, put them together, and made sure the enclosure just passed the raw drive and didn't try to do any fancy stuff. remapping. Fuck this.
