remembering that one time at my last career job when i had a respectful debate with a coworker over trans rights issues and got him to concede his point and change his stanceand then later that day the ceo and founder without my asking came and pulled him aside along with my manager and told him he was no longer welcome because he'd overheard his original shitty opiniondude had to beg for his job, and my manager who'd heard the whole convo convinced the ceo to give him another shot

@crushv yeah, dude was actually a pretty good guy, just raised by parents with really shitty opinions - his dad also worked there and held equally bad opinionsbut the guy in question was willing to re-examine his beliefs from the point of view of others, and he also respects science, so when you either make a really solid counter argument or show him multiple studies that say "this thing is true" that have reasonably good methodology he'll change his stance real quick

@ky0ko @crushv There's a lot of folks, especially older ones, who just don't understand these issues. I've run into that a few times. It's not malice, they just can't understand it because it's not something they think of.

@Alstein @crushv i think his dad actually holds malice but knows that isn't acceptable in that environmenthe himself did not hold malice, he just held incompatible viewsalso he is *exactly* my age - we were born 11 hours apart on the same day

@crushv @ky0ko *hugs* really sorry you have to deal with that! When I was worried about who I was, I was worried about stuff like that a lot, and it still worries me in a general sense because it's wrong!

@crushv @ky0ko I'm old enough to be a parent of a teenager, so it was pretty jarring. (part of the reason I started over my account here is that I didn't want to lie to people).
