@darThat's not how it is perceived by others who are just as oblivious as the author. Also, obviously everyone has their own personal beef with misrepresentation.

@danishcookies I suppose, but a social media platform (mastodon or any other) shouldn’t be such a large part of someone’s identity that the past 5 hours have been a fediverse-wide circlejerk to an audience that is already fully aware the merits of decentralized social media and how dumb the article is.

@darHooooo boy that first part is a real misconception here. Social media isn't just a place to "chitchat online". And especially not for Mastodon. For a lot of people this is an emotional outlet and support from peers. This is a channel for tech support from queer developers. This may also be the only place some people can be out of the closet. Even if it does not serve such purposes for you, you should be more aware of its importance for others.

@danishcookies sure, but the people who are here for that reason already know that, or else they wouldn’t have been here in the first place. what i’m saying is all the energy over the article is misdirected. what’s more likely to spread awareness of decentralized platforms, angrily circlejerking about a silly article where people from Twitter, Tumblr etc will never see or actively educating people about the merits of platforms like mastodon?

@darYou're asking why people do these things. I'm asking why not? It's a natural response to people badmouthing you. There's no gain either in trying to achieve some imaginary moral and composure high ground either. Also again, a lot of these posts are about self-reflection of Mastodon as a whole.

@danishcookies I haven’t seen much reflection regarding the article, but I’ve definitely seen plenty of attacks and ridicule by people misconstruing criticism of mastodon as criticism towards them personally.

@darFirst of all, the article was talking about EVERYTHING of Mastodon.Second, I'm pretty sure people are just making fun of liberals, like how we always do around here. This is just comedy gold material.I honestly don't see any "misdirected energy" here. We point out the fallacy of liberal rhetorics and make fun of their performative "resistance" like we always do. What bothers me more however is why you're persistent on "not reacting" to this.

@danishcookies Yeah, but that’s not what the reactions were when the article dropped — I’m talking about those paragraph-length posts I saw of people attacking the author like they singled them out and criticized them personally. That’s misdirected energy, but if people want to exhaust themselves or get worked up over something that’s so easy to laugh at and ignore, that’s their prerogative as much as it’s mine to laugh at them for doing so.

@darIn all honesty the author deserves every bit of that criticism.

@danishcookies agreed, but there isn’t enough time in the world to criticize all the shitty journalists that exist. even if there were i’m sure mastodon discourse would be very very low on the list of priorities

@darAgain, policing how people should react to this on a personal level isn't praxis.

@darAgain, policing how people should react to this on a personal level isn't praxis. It's closer to elitism.

@danishcookies I’m not policing anyone, I’m pointing at them and laughing — a lot. They can keep getting flustered over an article and I’ll keep thinking it’s silly and misguided.

@darNow that's wasting energy.
