Anyone bilingual from childhood here who forget one of the languages while growing up? Apparently it's a common thing when chlildren realize their parent talk English (or whatever the local language is) well that they start to forget their parents native language. It sounds like a weird experience to be fluent and then forget a language.

@niin My Spanish isn't the sharpest, but it's not something I forgot growing up. My father is a more interesting story though.Left Florida at 9 and went to Puerto Rico and forgot a good portion of English. After 10 years back to Florida where he had to relearn English. Not good at writing particularly either.Seems that if you immerse yourself in the language, like hanging out in a community that speaks it, you'll relearn the language quick enough.

@niin Plenty. I have some here in the States and on the island. I also attend a Spanish speaking church. Thanks to this my comprehension is pretty well, but speaking it isn't that great. I sometimes can't find the word I need to say or speak with an English mentality that can come off as poorly translated Spanish. It's the same with my Spanish speaking friends and family. They can comprehend English just fine, but since they don't get much chance to use it they might suffer in speaking it.

@niin I've definitely gone through phases where my french gets rustier and rustier from disuse. Using mnemosyne you can see how much you forget a day pretty clearly.

@niin this happened to me, though I learned three languages and forgot one of them.
