All of this litigation about Fortnite characters stealing signature dance moves is beyond fucking weird. Who decided that moving your body in a certain way should be copyrighted, or that it's even something a person should have exclusive rights to?Intellectual property is bullshit.

@sean I agree with you, but at the same time they should have known.

@moonman That litigation were possible? Sure, I can see that. But it doesn't make things any less bizarre.

@hcs I'd say that this were a money grab by CYOA, but Bandersnatch itself is kind of a money grab. It's interesting that the monopolistic entity in the branching-tree-book format genre would make such a gesture, but it's also not surprising.

@sean who decided moving your vocal chords a certain way should be copyrighted? who decided putting your fingers on a keyboard a certain way should be copyrighted?

@lain I agree, in fact the history of copyright litigators strong-arming live performance venues because musicians played more than three notes is a well-documented phenomenon, and is totally fucked.

@lain @sean intellectual property is theft except when we're suing people for copy and pasting our code and slapping a BSD license on it, amirite

@seanPeople are just acting like children, they put on a dance for people to see for free and won't bother with it unless someone memed the dance to death In which they will say "you stole my dance, you bastard" or incase of company's using the dance in a popular game or product in which they will say " I made it so now you owe me money becuase, your product is popular and my dance is in it" what a bunch of kids.

@Glectonzo it just feels like a failure of having realistic expectations. We live in a world where everything is somewhat derivative of something else, and if it's popular enough, virtually everyone will reference it in some way.

@Glectonzo @sean Dance-offs were meant to settle disputes, not cause them.

@ChrisWere @Glectonzo imagine a court room with two lawyers, carefully examining drawings of people stepping through dance moves to point out the similarities and differences, and whether someone's rights are being violated

@sean to be fair, I've only really seen the argument in the context of those dances majority coming from black people (except for the flossing one I think?)&the general media pattern of taking stuff black people do and whitewashing it&profiting off of it by reselling it to a white audiencebecause, yeah, fortnite is profiting off of these specific body movements, and in a big way. so, sure, copyrighting a dance is a silly extreme, but I understand being mad you got ripped off like this by a corp

@woomy yeah, that's a compelling counter-point, and it sucks for corps to be doing that.
