spending this week working on some “creature comfort” features in Pleroma.first up, an MRF policy module which strips the bare periods from Mastodon posts containing images and videos, since it just looks like crap.next up, an MRF policy module which adds attachment download links if they are not already present in the message. this is nice for adding URLs to messages which come from Mastodon clients and instances.

part of my motivation with this, of course is to demonstrate that MRF is not just useful for content blocking or content stripping, but has other practical purposes. referring to it as simply "SJW features," is quite ignorant and short-sighted. MRF can do useful things for everyone.

@kaniini I'm new at this - Didn't realize you could do *actual* links...is that through HTML or Markdown (or something else)?

@TheNerdyAnarchist yes, markdown. your admin can enable the support if they have not already done so, and then you'll have a dropdown allowing you to choose the format you're posting with.

@TheNerdyAnarchist oh, you are on a mastodon instance, nevermind. unfortunately Gargron thinks rich text formatting is out of scope for Mastodon, so...

@kaniini I hope you're not holding out any hope of that swaying such folks' minds at all though, the people that see "SJW's everywhere!" seem too invested in being upset to let anything ever really sway their minds :(

@keithzg no, that was a reference to some criticism from people who claimed that MRF is "SJW features" and that I spend my time "cramming SJW features into Pleroma." of course, both claims are patently absurd, but haters are going to hate I guess ;)

@kaniini i just assumed that it would get mangled when it hit mastodon. i have really low expectations for this software. i have a bunch of stuff i WANT it to do, but basically assume it's going to be barely better than a feature-fone.

@debbie I do use the instance filtering, but I make my own conclusions on what to filter. as I have said numerous times, taking other people's recommendations as gospel without investigating them is bad admin practice.

@dirb that's my point precisely: it's just technology, it can be leveraged to do whatever the admin wants it to do, for good or bad.

@debbie very few instances outright.mostly I use the timeline exclusion and forced NSFW features for instances that have lolicon or porn.we do exclude the "free speech" instances from the shared timelines as well, but that's mainly to prevent misunderstandings.and of course what we do is transparent and could be viewed on fediverse.network...

@debbie (I've also requested some media proxy features that would allow us to relax our position on say, baraag, for example. Right now we won't touch baraag media because we don't want it in our cache for legal reasons.)

@debbie I do understand that, I'm just saying that I'm skeptical of admins who just copy and paste a prebaked list like dzuk's in without actually researching it properly. in my opinion, the prebaled lists (including dzuk's) can be a useful data point to monitor, but an admin should be properly verifying everything he or she blocks instead of doing it based on heresay.

@kaniini i agree ofc but it is a bit sad when people cant talk their friends over at .social etc bcs we are blocked. this is why i try to get nice .social users to join niu.moe or smth. but afaik i aint blocked them. anyway it doesnt make me too happy that this blocking came to pleroma too. but it is not a problem as long we only block spammers etc.
