@jynx Interesting reading! I think that I have to find my old Toshiba 110CT and try to start it 😃 (it is not as exciting machine as your HP is, just am ordinary Pentium laptop with 24 MB of RAM and the Slackware 9).

@jirka @jynx Sometimes I feel like I am the only person in gopherspace without a pile of wonderful old devices. :(

@solderpunkNope, count me too! The oldest piece of tech I own right now is a Nintendo 64, which has sat in a tote for years.@jynx @jirka

@solderpunk @jirka @zlg avoid the sickness while you can! Thrify stores and ebay are just itching to suck you in!

@jynx @jirka @solderpunk lol, I have a buddy who's into Transformers and Lego, he spends so much time (and a bit of money) tracking down things and amassing collections, I dunno how people do it.I tend to approach things from a "use it or get rid of it" stance. Clutter is stressful, and I'd rather give or sell things to people who will use or enjoy them instead of stockpiling. That said, I'm due for another wave of downsizing. :P Still, it'd be nice to get a hold of a Thinkpad X220 or something. I hear they're really reliable.

@zlg @jynx @jirka I have to expend a *lot* of willpower to avoid accumulating stuff from eBay and thriftstores. If I were permanently settled somewhere in a large house I'd been drowning in old hardware, believe you me. But I move around a lot, including internationally, which leads to frequent downsizing, and I half-assedly aspire to one day live in an off-grid mountain cabin or something, so best to avoid buying in the first place.

@solderpunk If you don't mind me asking, what sort of job or lifestyle allows you to move around so often? It must be cool to see a bunch of places.

@solderpunk @zlg @jynx @jirka Of course, you've all got awesome little PDAs and palm-sized laptops and things which really aren't *that* hard to move around...

@solderpunk @solderpunk @zlg @jynx @jirka Speaking of, I’d love to find a little modern device with a good keyboard as a writing appliance - don’t feel right using a work laptop and two laptops won’t fit; my bag is huge but also mostly full. Something like a Gemini PDA in form factor, same radios or just wifi, but with solid Linux support. Anyone able to recommend?

@alexis @jirka @jynx @solderpunk If they ever make it to market (again), you could check out the DragonBox Pyra. It's made by the same people who made the OpenPandora, without the British branch that screwed over 1,000 people out of their machines (including yours-truly). The Pyra appears to be a spiritual successor that can run a complete Linux desktop and is around the size of a Nintendo 3DS, so it fits neatly into a pocket.Only catch is I don't think it's ready yet. I'm keeping my eyes on it for a portable emulation/Doom/Quake machine.https://pyra-handheld.com/boards/pages/pyra/

@zlg @jirka @solderpunk @alexis people were predicting the Pyra to come out in 2016. I am super skittish with vaporware, IDK. Even though it is more limited, I am thinking of buying a pocketchip and just using the terminal.

@jynx @zlg @jirka @solderpunk I'm going to try a cheap thin Chromebook with Linux and Emacs on it, since it looks like they have decent keyboards and good batteries, and see if I can make that work before I go for something more expensive, more niche, or more Kickstarter. :)Thanks all for the recommendations!

@zlg @anthk @alexis @jirka @solderpunk I am aware that the company went under, I am also aware of multiple repo mirrors. With open eyes, I made this purchase due to the fact that I want a wifi terminal. I am not a gamer. For ssh, and knowing the limits, it is a good deal.

@jynx @zlg @alexis @jirka @solderpunk A ZipitZ2, once you find a miniSD, is a good alternative, too. And, well, I own a PocketCHIP (I am the one who compiled Quake2 and a bunch of emulators in the forum, BTW), and once the NAND was in MLC mode, it bugged out itself much faster.

@anthk sweet work! I just can’t see myself playing any games on the thing. When I was following the crowdfunding and watching the reviews afterward all I could think was, ā€œman, what a cool little terminalā€ :^)

@jynx @solderpunk @zlg Fortunately at the moment I have no space for further devices. I have to play first with they that I already have.

@jynx @zlg @solderpunk @alexis You mean this Pyra? https://pyra-handheld.com/boards/pages/pyra/So you bought Pocket C.H.I.P. instead? I have one, too. The keyboard is not the best one but it is at least complete. I got it (on a Kickstarter?) with a big plans but I use it only sometimes as a better calculator (apcalc/octave/gnuplot) and as a ssh terminal... But for it's price it is a great computer.

@jynx It's good. Is not 80x25, but all packges are patched, even Nethack and BSDGames in order to fit a smaller resolution :).And, well, I woudn't code in Java on that, but tiny C programs as the one from suckless are totally doable. Is not very poweful compared to the PocketCHIP, but with the correct ffmpeg settings you can put nice media on it. Oh, no issues with FLAC/MP3/m4a audio files :D

@anthk it seems rare & hard to find. Currently there are not any on eBay (I am in excess of my purchase budget this month in either case). So, it is on my long term list of things I am looking for. Thanks for the heads up!
