trying to think of a way to quickly convey to people that when i say im very interested in tech, that i don't, in general, mean im interested in tech *products* (with a couple exceptions)i couldn't give less of a shit about the latest apple phone, whether the new samsung phone has a usb port, whatever the hell things amazon is trying to push, that cool new app you just found, or whatevertalk to me about microcontrollers and scripting and custom keyboards and os software from the 80s

@ky0ko the problem with that is people are simply unaware that those things even exist, most of the timetech interfaces are the only exposure people have to tech so often their minds shortcut to 'that must be all of what tech is'

like...i consider myself a huge techie, i don't have a day go by that i don't spend at least half my time on devicesi could choose to not own a smart phone and it would barely affect my lifeit makes it slightly easier because it's small, and work wants me to use certain apps, but i seriously could go without one, and i have trouble getting people to understand that this is even possible

@ky0ko same here. Everything I can do with my smartphone, I can also do with my laptop, but not vice versa. Although It is really handy when I travel, then I use it for navigation and all the tickets for public transportation are easily organised within the corresponding apps....

@bencmani haven't traveled significant distance by any way except car since before smartphones existed, aside from public transportation very very recentlyand my local public transportation infrastructure still uses tickets you punch holes inso that point is almost entirely irrelevant to me

@ky0ko I think my mind would go to that general space if you just told me you were into "DIY tech" instead of "tech".

@ky0ko Yeah, I'm having a hard time thinking of a brief term that covers the territory you describe.

@ky0ko How about talking to actual engineers and spergy hackers? They usually give a shit about such things. In fact a electrical engineer is exactly the guy you want to talk about those subjects.
