I was at the video game section of the Fred Meyer and I only saw one shitty game based off a movie- the one for Hotel Transylvania 3. I remember when you'd go to the video game area at Target and it'd be like half crappy games based on movies.

Not that I'd actually want the shovelware, but I kinda miss it.

The Wii had more completely awful titles than you could count, but you just don't see that any more. I'm guessing games just cost too much to make for the Xbone and PS4

@BestGirlGrace kinda the opposite, its not so much that its expensive now, more that the wii devkit was widely distributed and nintendo was very lax because they were too distracted by such an excellent financial turnout.

@LANthus Yeah, the Wii's popularity with families probably had something to do with it, too. Most shovelware is aimed at kids, after all. More kids had access to a Wii (and the PS2 and Gamecube before it) than have Xbones or PS4s these days, I bet

@VyrCossont @LANthus I was wondering when someone would bring this up- the revolutionary new shading technique trapped inside Shrek

@VyrCossont @LANthus yeah, for every Shrek diamond in the rough, there's countless games that are basically just trying to cheat children, the elderly, and parents who don't know better out of their money

@BestGirlGrace Devs seem to have realized that shelling out for a license is not synonymous with printing money.

@spottyfox Yeah, I talk about this downthread, but I'd reckon part of it is that the xbone and ps4 don't have the same popularity with kids that the earlier systems did, and so there's fewer people to sell shovelware to

@BestGirlGrace Oh, just ask Jim Sterling about the PS4. With digital downloads taking away the cost of distributing game media, the hardest part of getting shitty games on a console is convincing some random office worker to click "OK" on your back-of-the-case blurb.
