Just downgraded my GitHub account to the free tier after about 8 years and had a look through my billing history. Apparently spent ~$1,800 in total.

@aral are you now self hosting private repos, if so which solution did you choose? (I'm interested in following that path)

@sendung @carbontwelve Been self-hosting GitLab for about four/five years now, works well but is heavy (https://source.ind.ie)Take a look at Gitea for a more human-scale alternative for personal stuff.

@aral @sendung ah, yeah I have actually been looking at Gitea for self hosting. I setup Gogs for one employer and Gitea looks like an excellent forking of that project to add functionality I need.

@annika I have self hosted git with Gogs in the past and have recently been looking into doing so again with Gittea as it provides me all the functionality I need and will run on a server I am already paying for so saves me paying Github for the same. Do you use any helper application like that or are you running git "headless"?
