My family and friends are all using wire to communicate. I fear that it will all come crumbling down some day. It is open source and the company developing it makes all the right statements and claims they plan to make it selfhostable. It is not yet selfhostable though. I hope I have a solution in place that puts me in more control if/when that day comes.

Ideally I will have a selfhosted server setup.

@kelbot Since Wire doesn't federate and doesn't seem to have plans to, would Matrix not fit this better? Once Dendrite has feature parity I think I might try to switch to it (by then maybe the UX overhaul of the apps is done)

@MatterIt could be. I'm not sure what the best fit would be at this point.

@kelbot I've heard good things about Riot.im which runs on matrix as well. I plan on self hosting an instance soon

@kelbot Any reason XMPP wouldn't work? That's what my innermost-circle uses. Prosody and Let's Encrypt make set up a cinch and it is low resource enough to be able to squeeze on to just about any server you already maintain.
