Here's the thing that seems to have gotten lost these past two weeks...I grew up on this apparently misguided notion that all judges are supposed to be even-tempered, honorable, and above politics. ALL judges, not just SCOTUS.Even if you believe Kavanaugh, doesn't his behavior this past week give you pause? Does he really seem like a guy who can be judicial?I don't understand why the GOP didn't move on to another conservative candidate...setting aside the fact that SCOTUS shouldn't even be partisan.

@hashtaggrammar I think judges need to have those qualities only when performing their duties as a judge. I do not feel those qualities need to be reflected in their personal life however, in fact their personal life should be private most of the time.I dont think a truly impartial person in their daily life even exists. The best you can hope for is someone who simply puts on an act in their personal life to appear impartial. Which basically means a person who will constantly lie about thier views and opinions to get you to think they are impartial all the time. Thats the LAST thing I want in a judge. In the end they should be judged by their behavior and rullings when behind the bench or when acting in the capacity as a judge, not their personal life.

@freemo Oh I agree with you that everyone should be able to be free to be themselves in their private life (and here's hoping that their true character isn't shit). But once you're in government, you're representing your government and your role as soon as you agree to an interview on a major news network or in a Senate hearing. If you were in a job interview, you'd be expected to behave as you would at work, not at home with a beer.

@hashtaggrammar I agree, but i dont agree that a politicians personal life is a constant interview. That is our failing as citizens that we even give attention to reports that expose a politicians personal life (criminal activity isnt personal btw). It is something we as citizens should change, not something we should embrace in how we review our politicians. Vote for them based on their track record at doing their job, anything else look away. Or at least, thats my opinion.

@freemo That is a larger discussion that can certainly be complicated. But SCOTUS judges are supposed to have squeaky-clean records. Even if you allow them some transgressions, what I'm pointing out specifically is how Kavanaugh has reacted, in public, under pressure. People have pointed out Clarence Thomas was a cool as a cucumber during the Anita Hill hearing...

@hashtaggrammar Yea I can understand why you see that and respond with "well I dont want that personality as my SCOTUS". I think thats an understandable and reasonable gut reaction. But we have to admit that at least legally thats not enough reason to stop him for taking the position, even if we dont think he has the best character for it.
