Im looking for opinionsLike many I have been trying to reduce my reliance on my smartphone and have been de googling as much as I am able to.I have found out the 'Matrix' featue phone aka Nokia 8110 4G[0] can create a WiFi hotspotAs I am unlikely to be able to afford a librem 5 anytime soon I am thinking of switching from using a smartphone to a Nokia 8810 4G in conjunction with a (non-google) tablet/laptop for smart funtionality and more granular control. While its not a perfect option it seems to be a reasonable compromise in getting free from a smartphone without missing any functionality Thoughts?[0] https://www.nokia.com/phones/en_int/nokia-8110-4g

@jason I considered the same, but WhatsApp is a requirement for me. I read somewhere that WhatsApp might be coming to these devices, but haven’t read anything concrete.

@DistroJunkie @testie @kevI know the Nokia runs KaiOS which is a propriety sucessor of FirefoxOS, I don't use Facebook apps like whatsapp, im pretty sure the browser included will allow me to keep up todate with mastodon, the only other apps I really use is my bank's app and wire which I could use on a small tablet via WiFi hotspotThat said I am only basing my potential experience on what I use now not what new workflow I may develop

@AndrzejL Apple is your answer to everything these days, you shill lol.. @kev @DistroJunkie @testieI'm thinking I could look at making a tablet using a SBC + touch screen project running archlinux arm or armbian. Will look at compatible boards, could even consider fully opensource hardware n software options

@jason Nah... i just love my technology and i am not gonna limit myself. Also while I try to secure my personal data I am no longer paranoid/ wearing my tin foil hat. I love my iPhone and as far as I know so does @kev I am not planning to go “hermit” like you you big bird weirdo 😁

@AndrzejLI find it really odd/amusing that our attitudes in relation to privacy switched at some point in 2013 lol.

@jason @AndrzejL I think 2013 was the final straw for some folks.

@bobSeptember 2013 was a real eyeopener, prior to this privacy was not too much of a concern to me, I used to have a similar attitude to what @AndrzejL has now, whereas prior to then he was a card carrying member of the 'tinfoil hat brigade', he turned out to be proven right and chose to follow the 'f**k it' route, while I apologised to him for the pisstaking and have since decended into a state of enhanced self awareness bordering on near paranoia
