"Do your part" energy conservation plans, like turning lights off when you leave the room, are great for your energy bill, but their job as part of "lowering carbon footprints" is to deflect from the big corporations that actually use the vast majority of the power. For example, the average US stand-alone home uses ~11,000 kWh per year. The VERY MOST EFFICIENT roadside LED billboard uses ~61,000 kWh per year. That number rises to ~323,000 kWh at the top end.

@noelle An increasing number of roadside Lights and Billboards are retrofitting Solar panels and high-efficiency LEDs. It's cheaper than running cables or paying electricity bills. It's a long-term solution but change is already well advanced.

@chidgey The billboards are metonymy for the larger waste of electricity on a grand scale by corporations who then try to shift the blame onto the consumer. Their engineering is not the issue at hand.

@noelle As an electrical engineer - I 100% get what you're saying. I'm not disagreeing. Change takes time, unfortunately. Eventually companies won't want to spend money on electricity either due to cost. Most building use auto-switching lighting systems to reduce power costs on weekends and at night.

@noelle Also golf courses consume a shit ton of water. Grass fields in general too.

@noelle Those big corporations and their billboards wouldn't exist in the first place if we weren't consumerist whores in the first place. If we all spent our money sensibly and didn't throw our money after large corporations, the world would look very different. Billions of people in the developing world aspire to the lifestyle of 1950s America and have no intention of changing course.
