Over the past few months, I have come to believe that free software is lagging behind not in terms of technology, but in marketing and UX.Most people just don't know that alternatives exist. UX also suffers because there is less diversity of users providing feedback. These two problems keep feeding each other.#FreeSoftware #Marketing #UX

@njosephI totally agree! The FSF should be ashamed of the lack of UX especially. Most of their programs look like shit. Thankfully Gnome 3 is better looking now.

@njoseph because there aren't many artists, designers, and UX people doing open source... At least compared to programmers. Also, the ux, and design is usually an afterthought. Designers brought in after software already made.Of course I'm speaking in generalities here.

@njoseph Agreed. I definitely want to focus on UX/accessibility/diversity/adoption in my (extremely newbie) exploration into this field.

@garrett @jalcine Find a free software project that you're passionate about, preferably one that you use on a daily basis. Developers might not be good at story-telling. They might sometimes downplay the importance of their own projects. Helping with how the project is presented to the intended audience, using your skills to increase adoption etc.We don't have marketing people in free software because we don't have marketing people in free software. The first few should bring in the others.

@njoseph also, a donate button (or 3rd party donation site) is not necessarily the same as a well thought out business/funding model. Furthermore, just because it's Free Software doesn't mean one has to martyr themselves financially. That doesn't do one's project any favors either.

@ITwrx The only original idea (probably not) I have on this issue is providing a stipend to core contributors of free software projects. They can also receive donations in addition to this.It would be great if governments do this, but other organizations can too.

@njoseph Unfortunately, one of the things the free-software community has to deal with are people like me. Highly opinionated former sysadmins who hate on both the product as well as the user-community. "There are idiots pushing for stupid designs."There are people like me on other platforms, but in the free software world, we can be a lot more disruptive. We don't have to just suck up what's released from the OS distributor. We're also disagreeable with each other.

@njoseph very true. I hate most of the UI in free software. But with ones like Elementary OS, things i believe are really changing for good.

Small pointer, we are neglecting good team leader or management. It's their role to bring in more skilled contributors and manage their involvement.@njoseph @garrett @jalcine

Garrett,Joseph has good pointer for starting your contribution. Here is mine. This is starting pace of "marketing" so we don't have resources to stick to single project.I invite you to join as broader movement of reaching a vision.A vision to bring #floss project to greater height.Once we have a decent number of contributors in term of✅ marketing✅ promoting✅ content creatingThen we can choose 1 or 2 project to support exclusively.@njoseph @garrett @jalcine

@njoseph This has always been the case. Free software developers have mostly settled with writing code, not focused on broadening the user base. Historically there has even been a reluctance against everything that smells like "design" in terms of making something look polished, pleasant, or just similar to commercial software.

@njoseph For a long time I thought we need a marketing department. Maybe an org that takes donations and places ads everywhere.

@njoseph this was understood even in 1999! :)i worked for a startup called "eazel" that was trying to fix it, but well... 1999 was a bad time to have a startup, and the free world was (at the time) very antagonistic to amateurs...

@robey @njoseph Thank you for Nautilus! You mean the free world was antagonistic to professionals? It consisted of amateurs, and that's what Eazel tried to change.
