We need a logo for the #fediverse because when people equate #Mastodon to the entirety of the #fediverse like how @nextcloud did with that image at the bottom, we have a problem https://github.com/nextcloud/social

nextcloud nooo ugh why did you do thatNow that as good as nobody is using StatusNet anymore, and GNU Social has a logo of its own, maybe the good old StatusNet icon with the colorful speech bubbles could stand for the Fediverse.web.archive.org/web/2012010401…

And it's not the fault of Mastodon - it's widely used. It's just the first thing that comes to mind when people seem to think about the #fediverse.Which sucks because it's like the USA / America thing.

Rochko has consistently talked about the Mastodon network from the first Show HN to this day. His public Mastodon branding and marketing minimizes the role of the full network, even though he acknowledges and appreciates the Fediverse in technical Fediverse-local discourse and in some interviews with better-informed interviewers.

@jalcineI think it will help when other fediverse apps take off. For most people they barely know about the fediverse let alone mastodon, so whatever app they use as point of entry will kind of fill that.Once more apps integrate better on the fedi it should become more obvious that there's a diff

@jalcine it's kinda like Linux vs Gnu.if we insist on calling everything the fediverse then we are setting up cultural barriers to adoption.if we refer to each component and say they feature federation we don't get bogged down in #rms style pedantics.

@Xyc0 @jalcine that's like saying not calling email "gmail" is setting up barriers.

@lain @jalcine i just don't think the term 'fediverse' is going to get us anywhere with normies.i'd be happy be proven wrong.

@Xyc0 cool. I mean this is just (re-)asserting you're attempting to push a (unproven) idea as fact. The thing is, we haven't had a solid "proven" case because of market hype and herd approaches (see Google to search or Kleenex to face tissues) @lain

@jalcine @lain the example I gave of Linux vs Gnu is as close as I could imagine. In the early 90's people were referring to anything opensource as Linux, even when Linus was pretty clear about the name referring to his kernel. He even fought the name Linux.RMS insisted on calling it Gnu/Linux because of all of the Gnu utilities being ported to the kernel.I don't know many people refer to distros as Ubuntu Gnu/Linux or some such.

@jalcine @lain please don't think i have a dog in this fight.I host pleroma on my domain and couldn't imagine having to deal with mastodon.I've just been using mastodon longer.

@Xyc0 even to the "longer" part - Mastodon was my entry to the Fediverse but with the knowledge of more, it'd be more a choice in complacence than encouraging plurality into the space @lain

@clacke @jalcine would you be surprised if I tell you I doesn't seem to work properly with other thing than mastodon? see:https://github.com/nextcloud/social/issues/287https://github.com/nextcloud/social/issues/296https://github.com/nextcloud/social/issues/297

@dirb @jalcine I am not surprised that somebody would go to Mastodon first. But at least they seem to be accepting noncompatibility with other implementations as bugs.It will be good when there are narrower test suites available, intended for the Fediverse in practice rather than for ActivityPub. I understand that's what @feneas has or is working on, and that the #LitePub people will also have one.

@lain @jalcine IRL told someone about the fediverse after their Instagram was taken down for their Christmas photos.they thought it was the US federal government and wanted nothing to do with it.

@jalcine @nextcloud Would be willing to offer a version of this instance's logomark into a Creative Commons license for the Fediverse writ large: https://indieweb.social/about/more
