might fuck around and make a video that critiques some fascists in a humorous way and gets me lots of followers then leverage it into a patreon where i stake my business model on making fun of yet more fascists in a way that really only platforms them more widely and feeds their own self-promotion and definitely doesn't achieve anything productive in spite of the good intentions with which i began this venture

full disclosure: I went through a period of watching videos like this because I found them entertaining and they were introducing me to people (fascists) I'd never heard of before and were eminently mockable, like The Golden One, a very odd Swedish bodybuilder nazi. but also: I don't think they're actually good and I think they're instead kind of parasitic and feed back into the ecosystem that lets such people promote themselves more

similarly: okay, you spend hours each day watching Infowars so you can clip snippets of Alex Jones being ridiculous and share them on twitter for yuks, but in the end you're really just... watching Infowars and then sharing it more widely

I think there's value in criticism-with-examples. And especially in a closed group, the dynamics are different. But if you're making it the way you earn money you're incentivised to find new people to dunk on and maybe as time goes on you're primarily dunking on people who weren't prominent to start with but can leverage your critique into saying "the cultural marxists are attacking me!"

also, this is cynical and I don't think it applies to everyone doing this at all but: if your living is based on critiquing things fascists say, you might not actually want to 'defeat' them. it's materially more beneficial for the predominantly cis white men doing this kind of video to ensure there is always more fascist content to dunk on. that way they always have something to make content off of

@AnndraADunn At best, you're mocking people who lucidly and rationally came to a set of political beliefs. At worst, you're mocking those to faint minded, or mentally incapacitated to understand the society in which they live. Neither is particularly glamorous or elevated.I think this kind of media only further drives a wedge and widens the polarisation gap, allowing each side to more easily dehumanise the other. I think it's important to see these people as people and understand them and be kind to them than to keep pushing them away, and in our more recent situation, push them outside of the system so far they feel they have no choice but to gravitate and support the most extreme and forceful.
