like, based on what I've read, the problem is that immigrants stick with their kind and don't assimilate (or at least not as fast as some would hope), eg. a lot of women don't speak English and their husbands don't let them learn it because they don't want women to have powerwell, if they lived among a more diverse group of people then wouldn't they learn the more progressive values faster?

@grainloom I find it horrifically racist to presume not learning english is a) a problem and b) that muslim men as a rule keep their wives disempowered.have you considered in regard to point a than Westerners should learn more languages and be more cultured?btw I'm married to a Muslim man and doing a law degree. when I finish I'll be more educated than he is.

@PinkCathodeCat the problem was not directly that they don't learn English but that by not learning English they can't talk to others outside their group

@grainloom many know more than their first tongue - e.g some women might know arabic and a tribal language or urdu and punjabi and sindhi. meaning their circle is already bigger than ours as one language speakers.I think it's pretty presumptuous to think that many women won't learn or improve their English.what I'm trying to get at is that these 'fears' are the results of an irrational fear of the other brought about by the ruling classes

@PinkCathodeCat those languages won't be much use to them in Europe thoughI've definitely heard about Muslim immigrants enforcing gender based segregation, but it's possible the stories were exaggerated. If you have reliable statistics on these I'd love to see them. I have an exam tomorrow so I don't have time to look them up on my own right now.

@grainloom and I don't have time to deal with a racist who lacks an understanding of the problems of western feminist interpretation of 'gender segregation' so bye for now
