there’s always been a sad dichotomy between computer science - the formal discipline - and computer science - the exciting thing that lets us make cool stuff and improve the worldtests, documentation, proper agile coding - this is all well and good but don’t forget the “why”.learning to code is about more than checkboxes and procedures. learning to code is about creating something, making mistakes, getting messy.i hate most modern comp sci curriculums bc i feel like the fun has been lost

@scarly I have a lot of problems with how CS is taught these days, and a lot of it boils down to how most of it is teaching people to bang out the next Enterprise Java Whatever or Buggy Web App instead of the fun, creative, enjoyable part of computer science

@BestGirlGrace pretty much exactly thisthe bad part is that people that are honestly in love with the creative aspect of computer science are so poorly served by some of the curriculums that they're already burned out by the time they graduate (if not before)

@scarly Yeah, I can't imagine what's going on in those Java schools or boot camps. Part of it is captialism and how it devalues anything the corporate masters can't make money off of and how people are pushed into fields of study they might not like, but can make good money.I was lucky to have an education that made me realize the fun and beauty in the world, and I wish everyone could have that
