Prediction: at some point, failure to actively and completely participate in social networks will be considered a sign of subversive behavior that must be investigated, similar to using PGP email or Tor is today.

@jerry Don't tell me that. I bet the biggest CEOs today hardly use their social media accounts (if they have any)

@m4iler good news: The wealthy are exempt from this rule, as they are from many other rules.

@jerry Well then, let's become rich or influential! I bet Stallman would be on the "no-fuckery" list right under Zucc.

@jerry I think it's probably happening among those background check companies and it's probably a little "unable to verify" mark on the report.

@crazypedia that system is much more complex. It factors what you purchase, how you pay bills, who you associate with in person and online (and how they rank on all these factors), among many other considerations.

@jerry https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_Credit_System"Website operators can mine the traces of data that users exchange with websites and derive a full social profile, including location, friends, health records, insurance, private messages, financial position, gaming duration, smart home statistics, preferred newspapers, shopping history, and dating behaviour."

@switchingsocial @jerry I have, only momentarily, considered bringing an RPi or Arduino on trips to keep me busy. Then I realize that's a shortcut to being handcuffed in a locked room

@switchingsocial @jerry @annika what I don't get is, how does anyone think that someone would be plotting a terrorist attack on paper on a plane next to someone who can clearly see what they are writing....(especially if she thought he was gonna attack the plane they were on, which... seriously? that'd be the worst prepared attack in the history of humanity)

@switchingsocial My memory may be failing, but this is probably the story I was thinking about: https://www.eff.org/press/archives/2009/04/13 - wasn't on a plane, was at a university, and wasn't recent. I suspect I smashed this one in my mind with the math equation situation you mentioned.

@jerry It's getting there. I had to set up a LinkedIn account as an employment pre-req (2005) and a Facebook account to comply with a background check (2007).

@grainloom @switchingsocial @jerry @annika - Most people’s ideas of evil doing come from movies. You see the villian preparing for the attack, often speaking and writing in indecipherable languages, codes, and texts. Storywise, this paints the villian as an other, as something foreign and wrong. Folks see it in real life and freak out. Art imitating life imitating art. That’s how the CFAA was drafted as well... so there’s that.

@tinker @grainloom @switchingsocial @annika makes me wonder if real life bad guys are also influenced by movies and feel the need to create crazy diagrams and written plans, simply because that’s the expectation...

@jerry @tinker @grainloom @switchingsocial @annika Given who produce the movies we are talking about, I doubt real-life #Evil people work so.Actually, if I think about #Mafia, I guess it's much more people meeting for lunch and discussing who to kill and how while drinking a glass of wine and playing with their kids.Maybe they are modeling Evils after owner and managers of #Capitalism that... plan and manage.Or they use the "stigma of Evil" to ridiculize attempts to change the things.1/

@jerry @tinker @grainloom @switchingsocial @annika A nice example from #Disney is Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz, in the toon "Phineas and Ferb".He is the only #hacker who actually want to change the world (for the worse, from the O.W.C.A. perspective).Phineas and Ferb, despite being just as smart as him, are deeply integrated in the mainstream vision: each morning the world is just like the day before and they are fine with it.Ferb is the ideal #SV #engineer: he's smart and do what others want.

@jerry @tinker @grainloom @switchingsocial @annika Yes, I loved it too.Until I realized that #Doofenshmirtz, with all his pain and suffers, is there to make hackers like me appear ridiculous.Think about it: in real life there's no way a person with his genius would go after such dumb goals. He would change the #world, not just Danville and nearby. The message for kids is: have fun, but don't try to change things.
