I have mentioned my little pirate box in the past, yes? Well, I'm planning on doing more and similar stuff this year. Specifically, I'm looking at self hosting some services and connecting them back to the larger internet. I'm trying to decide which things I want to self host, and which things I want to connect to the internet, and how.

For example, I think I want to make my Kodi server accessible remotely. I think I can do this by running a VPN that connects to my home network, and connecting to that from my mobile devices, and then using UPnP. I can't think of a reason that *wouldn't* work, as long as I take the time to tinker it together correctly.

@MasterControlProgram UPnP isn't technically required if using a VPN btw. Just make sure to properly NAT your VPN and home networks.I recommend pivpn (http://www.pivpn.io/) it should work with any debian based distro.

@acidburn Thanks for this. My goal is to stream from my kodi server to a mobile device. I currently do this using a UPnP streaming app. Are you saying that there is a better way to do that?

@MasterControlProgram VPN is a more secure way then using UPnP.

@acidburn Right. I think that maybe I'm not explaining myself, or maybe you're not familiar with this use of UPnP. I'm hoping to connect to my local VPN, and then use UPnP for service discovery from my streaming server to my UPnP playback app. This only works for devices on the same network, which is why I would need the VPN in the first place. Without using UPnP, how would my media player find the videos stored on my Kodi server?

@MasterControlProgram Ah, I see now. If you use VPN, just manually set the playback app to use the IP of the kodi server. UPnP is not required at that point for discovery since you know the IP already. As for video discovery, once connected to kodi, kodi will send you a list of videos and such.

@acidburn Do you have a playback app you can recommend that supports that?

@MasterControlProgram Also, if you still want to use UPnP, you can.
