Bruh if someone paid me enough to just get by, I'd love to do NOTHING but work on F/LOSS software. But we still got this mentality that work has to be done without sustainability. Probably the biggest reason why these companies were able to weaponize the software against us; we wouldn't even support our own.

There's the whole model of producing some software (in the Web landscape) and charging for a hosted version of it - which works okay if you can price it right for both the user and for the person / entity running it.It runs amuck in our society because of how tendrils from mega-corps can do what we do but a super small fraction of the price; effectively eliminating us.

@noorulBecause people consider money in free software dirty, most independent free software is done in spare hours, and most software, free or not, is controlled by large corporations with ulterior motives.Did I get that right, @jalcine ? I think I didn't entirely catch where you were going.

@clacke You have stats to back the "independent free software" bit? From my recollection, projects like KDE, Linux and the like are done by working people whose jobs either align and/or allow them to be paid to work on F/LOSS on a regular basis. @noorul

@jalcine the shift from benevolent dictatorship to cooperative ownership in FLOSS projects can't come too soon. That's the only way to ensure adequate, sustainable funding for all those working on the code while enforcing democratic management and accountability

@Antanicus @jalcine I agree with your aim and sentiment, but I think the right model for each project depends a lot on circumstances, both essential and accidental.
