@hj flif just has more features/better compression/faster/etc. but no browser will probably add any image format soon, and google won't add something they didn't write for sure

@wowaname @vaartis FLIF is good general-purpose standard meant, but mozilla isn't quite ready to accept it, while chrome requires it to be drastically better than webp to be added.

@hj @vaartis I agree. At the same time it had kind of became a standard due to Chrome's monopoly so with FF holding out it was kind of annoying not just being able to switch to a certain format.

@sjw @hj yeah the site says "FLIF is a lossless format. Still, if you want to, you can allow the encoder to modify the input image in order to improve compression. "

@dwmatiz @vaartis @sjw well because web needed a more standardized loicense video format and codec. Video formats and codecs at the time were too diverse and mostly non-free. Meanwhile images were much more streamlined: JPG, PNG, GIF are free and widespread, with TIFF and others taking a backseat.

@dwmatiz @hj @vaartis I mean, isn't webp basically just the VP8 codec? The best thing I like about webp is it's animation. It's an image that supports alpha and lossy compression. It's basically APNG but a lot smaller file. And since it's an actual image it's not a half ass solution like using a video and pretending it's an image like Imgur and Gfycat do.

@hj @vaartis @dwmatiz I know Facebook is already testing it and it works in yellow Chrome. The implementation dark FF had isn't compatible (that might have changed by now).Speaking of that, does stable Chrome support hardware accelerated VP9 yet? I know that's been a big plus for me with stable FF for several months now so I can watch 4K 60FPS YouTube videos with almost no CPU usage.

@feld @vaartis @dwmatiz @hj Since Firefox and Chrome can be installed on MacOS that's not much of an issue. Additionally, Chrome is the most commonly used browser on MacOS. That just leaves iOS. Chrome can be installed on iOS (not sure about FF) so there's the solution to that. However, Safari is still the most poplar on iOS.The new Edge if going to be Chromium based so that'll bump up Windows support.https://netmarketshare.com/browser-market-share.aspx?options=%7B%22filter%22%3A%7B%22%24and%22%3A%5B%7B%22platform%22%3A%7B%22%24in%22%3A%5B%22Mac%20OS%22%5D%7D%7D%5D%7D%2C%22dateLabel%22%3A%22Trend%22%2C%22attributes%22%3A%22share%22%2C%22group%22%3A%22browser%22%2C%22sort%22%3A%7B%22share%22%3A-1%7D%2C%22id%22%3A%22browsersDesktop%22%2C%22dateInterval%22%3A%22Monthly%22%2C%22dateStart%22%3A%222017-12%22%2C%22dateEnd%22%3A%222018-11%22%2C%22segments%22%3A%22-1000%22%7D

@sjw @hj @dwmatiz @vaartis "chrome" can be installed on iOS, but it's still Safari inside. No third party browsers on iOS are allowed to bring their own rendering engine. And Safari on MacOS is the only sane browser because the rest eat your battery like crazy. Yes, FF and Chrome are nicer. But they suck too much power.

@feld @vaartis @dwmatiz @hj Wait, really? So it's essentially just a skin for Safari? That's :gayashell: That only applies to laptops tho. Doesn't matter much if you have something like a Mac mini or an iMac.
