The best-laid schemes o' mice an' menGang aft agleyChristmas eve, at 2330, I noticed the water pressure was a bit low. Christmas day, no water. We have our own water supply. So, in-between cooking Christmas lunch I was trying to restore the water supply. No pressure (pun intended). The recent storms had up-ended a tree. In turn, the tree roots had torn the water pipe from the dam, cutting the supply. The dam was now broken, and the pipe needed re-routing. Not an easy job.>>>#Burns #DIY

<<<Nothing could be done at thirty minutes to midnight on Christmas eve. However, at least, I was forewarned that something was ahead of me the next day.I was up like a shot next morning, breakfasted fast and up the hiil to discover the problem. [The water is gravity fed, so of course it is up the hill.]My heart sank when I saw the problem. I had two pieces of lucky unluck: I had prepared lunchhttps://mstdn.io/@fitheach/101298623215652741and the weather was dry & bright.I *was* going to do this.>>>

<<<The upturned tree roots pulled the water pipe, destroying the dam. The upturned tree also created a huge mound of earth, so the water pipe had to be re-routed. The pipe was below ground, of course. I was sweating by the time I finished the work.I managed to get a temporary solution rigged which got water flowing again. We had water.Running out of water, followed by reconnecting, results in really murky water as described here:https://fitheach.co.uk/life/country-living/>>>

       >>>The murky water isn't drinkable, but it can be used for flushing the loo. Progress. For drinking & cooking I had to bring buckets of water from the burn into the house. Effort not too bad because the quantities aren't huge. The murkiness will clear once everything settles again. About 36 hours is usually enough time.We had water in the house again and Christmas lunch was on the table at the planned time. Life was good.Except one wee mishap still to come...>>>

<<<I was still in rushing around mode and this may have contributed to my next mishap.I got up from the sofa, not realising that my foot was caught around the laptop power cable. Realising too late I was able to save the laptop, but my knee landed heavily on the fire surround bricks. To prevent myself pitching forward I put out my hand. Unfortunately, I chose the door of the wood burning stove and subsequently got burns (blisters) on my palm and four fingers.Burns again. 😃

The text at the start of my parent post comes from the poem "To a mouse" by Robert Burns. It is the story of a wee mouse whose home is accidently destroyed by a ploughman (Burns himself). Burns makes the point that neither mouse nor man can rely on their plans being realised.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/To_a_Mouse#Burns #poetry #life

@fitheach Even the Queen of England had her "annus horribilis"... :-)I for one appreciate stories of every day life from normal people like you and I who do not happen to be a queen or a king or famous or rich.I suppose every day life would get a bit boring without some excitement like this!

@sajith I won't be getting the journalists from Hello magazine chapping on my door anytime soon.Funny thing is, I have this kind of "excitement" all the time. Must be lucky, I guess.
