I'm not sure how I can call myself Communist when I've disagreed with the political philosophy of every country which called itself that.

@z Yeah no kidding. Stalin would have you gassed for supporting faggots and trannies. But you are the eternal useful idiot. 99% of communist lackeys can't spell the word bourgeoisie, and you are no different. You don't know anything about the underlying theory and ideology. You just believe whatever your masters on the television set tell you to think, without ever using your brain. You've never even thought a controversial or forbidden thought in your entire life. What a waste of a brain.

@folk I don't think you actually know anything about communism. While I haven't watched TV in a while, I have never heard anyone use those phrases basically ever.

@z Cool. Whatever.Regardless, you've never thought about anything outside of the narrow Oprah Winfrey show scope of what is considered acceptable opinion. You're an automaton without a soul and with your brain turned off, on autopilot.

@folk so I'm going to recommend you this start with this speech from Marx. It's short, I think you'll find it congruent with what you already believehttps://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/iwma/documents/1868/machinery-speech.htm

@z You know I'm an anprim :anprim: right? If you're going to refer to a socialist who I agree with on this topic, you'd be better off going with Betrand Russel's In Praise of Idleness.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skHCkCDBrls

@z @folk Also Karl Marx:> The contest for the territories which opened the dire epopee, was it not to decide whether the virgin soil of immense tracts should be wedded to the labor of the emigrant or prostituted by the tramp of the slave driver?I guess he didn't think anyone was here when we showed up.https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/iwma/documents/1864/lincoln-letter.htm

@p @z Or, you know, maybe no one with a correctly working brain would concern themselves with what the desires of conquered foreigners wanted. It takes a supremely mentally ill individual to start wringing their hands over what inferior defeated people want us to do with OUR society. You're literally more defective of mind than Marx.

@p I think Marx was very actively trying to curry favor with Lincoln and the US. Lincoln in turn likely did not care about Marx perse as much as European elites and intellectuals as he wanted to maintain them as trading partners. To his contemporaries, I think he was seen less as a revolutionary than another mid-century Republican.

@folk @z They weren't foreigners, but that wasn't my point. My point was calling it virgin land is stupid, because there were people. Anyway, it was Hernán Cortés that killed them all, and the overwhelming number of deaths were accidental. Not that he was by any means a nice guy, but smallpox tore its way up the continent and had killed 90% of the native population before non-Spanish people got here. Showing up and stepping over plague corpses doesn't even really count as conquering.

@z He was the first Republican, so "another Republican" would be a strange belief for them to have.Regardless, calling the New World "virgin land" was stupid.Marx spent most of his time living off money from Engels, and for a man that lionized the working class, seems to have not ever engaged in menial labor of any sort.Incidentally, also Karl Marx:> What is the secular basis of Judaism? Practical need, self-interest. What is the worldly religion of the Jew? Huckstering. What is his worldly God? Money.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_the_Jewish_Question

@p Republican-ism starts with Plato, and certainly many French revolutionaries considered themselves Republicans. In no world do either Marx or Lincoln lay claim to being the first Republican.Marx is an incredibly flawed figure but I think there is solid insights in many of his written works. I think Castro and Lenin are actually even more extreme in that they both have incredibly well-written essays and unquestionably killed people.

@z So, maybe lower-case "republican". Have you heard the theory that "The Republic" was intended as satire? That's more or less how I feel about Churchill, but I haven't seen anything that wasn't misguided (at best) from Marx. Historical materialism is possibly a more damaging theory than other facets of Marxism. If I'm going to read a commie's agitprop, I think El Che is a better writer than Marx; more interesting and much more cogent.

@p I think Varouvakis has the best critique of Marx. He was brilliant in identifying what's wrong with capitalism and horrific at providing solutions. To me that's not a bad spot place for a thinker. I mean I think that effectively described Alan Kay.I don't see historical materialism as that absurd. The technologies around us dictate the shape of the economy and the society is shaped by the needs and effects of that economy. Without that causality, it makes no sense for YC kid to think he can change the world with a tech startup.Che spends a good chunk of time hating America which is a fun thing for edgy teens to do. The power of Marx is he sees how the gears of captialism turn. There are countless essays these days about why X bad thing happened with the economy when we told X' would happen. Marx over a hundred years ago lays out exactly why it happens. There is a real goldmine in thought there.

@p "The Republic" is almost certainly a pitch from Plato that he or someone like him be a tyrant over some city-state.
