I can understand the companies that are changing to a closed-license-in-open-clothing. The description is universal (to them): we open our code, others make huge money reselling it, and we get no meaningful contribution back. If you end up funding all the development, it makes sense to use a proprietary license - you're basically running a proprietary development model, anyway, and giving it away. But that doesn't mean the license is the problem - 1/3

Lots of #opensource projects end up in a virtuous circle of contributions from many corners. #linux, #k8s, #angularjs, #react-native, #npm, #ansible, #tensorflow, #drupal... Off the top of my head. Those are big projects, but so are #redis and #mongodb. At that level of adoption, if you're still funding all the engineering, it's strong evidence that there's a market of potential contributors you're just not addressing well - 2/3

Running an open source project means investing in #community at least as hard as you invest in engineering. Anything less is proprietary development with an open door. - 3/3

@ohthehugemanatee Though I would say that open door it's own is vital. Not that I don't try to do more than that for my personal projects.

@alcinnzThe open door is a great first step. But don't expect it to pay for your business!

@ohthehugemanatee It's just a huge step for it to go beyond a personal project, and while I have tried I haven't accomplished it.

@ohthehugemanatee As for the value of the open door, we'll just have to disagree. I see it as an important check-and-balance for there to be the potential for software to be forked. Which can happen while the door's only open.
