I’m angry at a lot of my community that hasn’t made the effort to leave the big toxic platforms.Maybe it’s social media fatigue, maybe it’s fear of unknown or unproven platforms. In plenty of cases, deep down, maybe it’s the drop in follower count. Sometimes it’s an ironic resistance to learning something new. Remember when everyone asked “what is a tweet??” and didn’t know how @ replies worked? Yeah. We can all learn something new.I wish more people would choose to.#community

@chartier what if people don’t realize it’s toxic? Either complacent or completely oblivious?

@Bzdata At this point, I’d say most of my followees and followers on Twitter know it.Facebook is a tossup; I had a lot of non-tech friends there. It’s plausible that The Algorithm™ protected them from some or even all of the enlightening stories. But still, it’s *everywhere* these days. Even mainstream media covers this stuff now. Hell, even Fox News tries to play the victim bringing up some of this stuff.

@Bzdata Also, TBC, I totally get that this stuff isn’t easy for non-tech folks. Their community is in a place, and that means everything. I totally get that, and I’m less upset at them for not having the motivation or technical skills to try moving.I am less forgiving of my technical and media friends because of the reasons I mentioned in the first toot. They know there are serious problems. But for various reasons I would lump together as “mostly petty,” they don’t act. That makes me mad.

@chartier @Bzdata "They know there are serious problems. But for various reasons...they don’t act. That makes me mad." That's nailed it for me Dave. I don't get it either. Why don't they act? I suppose in some cases they're protecting their 'audience' and being where their audience is but beyond that, I just don't get it.

@chidgey @Bzdata It could be a variety of reasons, some I feel are more understandable than others. It could be social media fatigue, fear of learning something new (😡), resistance to an unproven platform, or just plain fear of losing dat follower count (😡), and more. But still. Quite disappointing.

@chartier @chidgey the ones that really don’t act and are equally infuriating are the: “well I keep X and Y life separate” well guess what in user metadata, it isn’t separate. All of your actions aggregate into one big persona that guide and train an algorithm
