@thegibson I can't say it's related, but doesn't this quote from the recently released FB emails sound an awful lot like the #fediverse ?"The number one threat to Facebook is not another scale social network, it is the fracturing of information / death by a thousand small vertical apps which are loosely integrated together,"Â

@observer It does, and we are the fate that they fear.If it's not the fediverse, it will be a decentralized platform that comes after. We are taking it back.We are restoring the future.I'm not even joking.I will stand on this rock and curse the storm.

@observer @thegibson I think they had something more like a wealth of specialized apps/sites with minimal sharing.... but the fediverse could be an even meaner threat. If we build & federate *novel* apps and social sites, we can hit them right dead in the fears.Tho we should continue to build replacements for existing platforms/apps.

@rook @observerWe must look like their worst nightmare in some ways...no centralized control... thousands of instances, many of which wholly reject their money and influence. In their eye.... a few million freaks... that are hanging on when they shouldn't be able to exist like this without them.Keep dancing friends. Do the thing.

@thegibson Had an interesting thought. What if the Internet got flooded with charts like these? Would people pull their stock out and cause a domino effect like the Great Depression? Could one bankrupt Facefarm by fabricating enough of these kinds of images? Unfortunately, probably not, or at least until there's a better alternative to hunt people down with such a wealth of biometrics info. In the next few years, people will be logging into their 23AndMe account using Facefarm credentials.

@TheGibson I'm not sure 142-132=22 though.(Although it's interesting to see such a drop, of course, as a very good weather indicator. Thanks for sharing.)

@observer @thegibson oops, that came out a little ambiguous... "the fediverse could be an even meaner threat" was meant to stand on it's own... an existing possibility, not predicated on building novel apps. Was aiming to amplify, not "no but" all over it.

@rook @thegibson @observer I had always thought that was how Google would kill Facebook, but then they changed course and built a highly integrated "Facebook killer" that failed to kill Facebook. But now they're back to the original strategy and it could still work, since they've been avoiding a lot of the egg on Facebook's face.

@freakazoid @observer @thegibson tbh I think Google's problem is that they were trying to compete instead of trying to serve their users, especially when it came to social networking (i.e. FB.com vs Buzz/G+ or whatever.)As for building stuff... they keep killing everything off. I wouldn't start on a new Google product today (assuming I trusted them with my data) since it's just going to get reworked or canned in 2 years.
