       @sjw @GreenandBlack Assuming--According to Wikipedia:According to a Gigaom interview with Paul Kane, chairman of the Internet Computer Bureau, the domain name registry is required to give some of its profits to the British government, for administration of the British Indian Ocean Territory.After being questioned as a result of the interview, the British Government denied receiving any funds from the sale of .io domain names, and argued that consequently, the profits could not be shared with the Chagossians, the former inhabitants forcibly removed by the British government.

       @sjwThe Indian Ocean Territory (.io) was created when the Chagos Archipelago was illegally split off from Mauritius during the fall of the British Empire.Shortly after, the 3000 islanders who had been there for generations were forcibly evicted and deported to Seychelles, Mauritius and the UK. Their pets were killed and their belongings destroyed. This was all done to make way for a US military base, from which they bomb South Asia. The islanders have been prevented from returning ever since. Using .io domain names directly supports ongoing colonialism.
