Hey Mastopeeps, if you had an idea for an app but your #coding ability was limited to html and css (oh and you kinda sorta knew BASIC as a teen but that was 30 years ago and it was very 'kinda sorta') what would be the best programing language to learn in order to begin the long winded process of making it real.Asking for a friend...(the friend is me)

@Shutsumon I personally vote for lua in most cases, but it really depends on what the app is?

@ajroach42 I want something where people can share information about foraging spots in their local area including exact locations and maybe reviewsEg There's a pear tree on waste ground near the bus stop I use after work. That's loaded with fruit. Caveat the waste ground is a steep slope so accessibility is an issue.

@Shutsumon @ajroach42 a) as others have said, Python is a good place to startb) actually if you know HTML and CSS, Javascript may be more useful - there are tools out there to turn web code into mobile apps (HTMLE, PhoneGap)c) an app for sharing foraging info means sharing info, which means storing info, which means you need both an app and a server, and you've gotta program both. that's a tough place to start out. start out by looking for existing tools you can adapt to your needs!

@joshg @Shutsumon @ajroach42 To rephrase, find an open source app that does much of what you need, then consider learning that language. Your passion for the project will help you up the learning curve.

@petjal @joshg @Shutsumon @ajroach42 I'll second this advice. Which language depends more on the starting point and target platform. Fork and have fun modifying instead of trudging your way thru programming manuals.ProTip: they're all terrible.
