@TurboMoistDidn't most modern batteries solve this problem, like, a decade ago? I'm pretty sure this is basically an urban myth as far as modern devices are concerned

@TurboMoist This happened to my mom. She would leave her phone charging all the time and the battery swelled up. The phone broke because of that.

@TurboMoist Modern batteries have lots of smarts for preventing that. It's no big deal.

@nichii i hope she learned her lesson, when i worked at a place that specialises in batteries, we would get stuff like this all the timehad to explain why and stuff, it's very common

@TurboMoist I have left phones plugged in for weeks or maybe even months... (why? because that phone was the spare one and not the daily driver)

@TurboMoist Hehe I already had it for a year and a half and I think the battery lasts like 2 hours or something idk. Gonna replace it for other reasons soon (dropping it on the floor to many times so the keyboard is glitchy)

@bob it's not based on devices, it's based on batteriesyour phone knows when it's charged, the battery and charger do not. so it'll keep directing power to the battery and can cause overchargebe responsible with ur battery

@TurboMoist while Li-ions batteries certainly do have issues with overcharging and overdischarging on their own, smartphones (and basically any other mass-marketed device using them) have a couple circuits made specifically to avoid these issues. If you're interested in what those do to prevent damage, check this out: https://www.digikey.com/en/articles/techzone/2016/sep/a-designer-guide-fast-lithium-ion-battery-charging

@TurboMoist Yeah, she learned her lesson after that. I told her she can't leave the charger plugged in all the time. Only charge it when the battery is very low. It probably didn't help that it was a cheap Metro PCS flip phones. At least the phone wasn't expensive to replace.
