I find it difficult to play games with fixed narrative and often find myself drawn to city builders (Sim City, City Skylines), "farming simulators" (Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley) and open world RTS (EVE Online, UFO: Enemy Unknown)What all these have in common is a theme of exploration, creativity and construction - often without any concept of death.Out of all the games that I have attempted to play, Minecraft is the one that has stuck with me the longest. I think that is because it's quite relaxing and allows me to spend hours crafting things - even when not playing on creative. When playing games like those I mentioned above I have never said that I am gaming, more "I spent last night exploring an amazing cave system in Minecraft" or "I should show you the farm I created in Stardew Valley")I have no idea where I am going with this, so you will have to excuse me while I hit toot, because I already spent twenty minutes typing this all out and deleting that would make me sad.#minecraft #gaming

@carbontwelve I’ve just started Fantasy Life, and I’m looking forward to not rushing myself through it like I do with most linear games. Anyway, this was really nice to read because I like contemplative gaming toots.

@carbontwelve What I like in video games is generally a mix between exploration and story.I was a great fan of Fallout 4, it had a strong background, a good story, a big map to explore and i spent a long time building my own town when i wanted to do something else.Sometimes i needed action and fighting, sometimes i felt more like travelling with my dog. This game offered a lot of freedom.

@carbontwelve And i agree with you about Minecraft. When i play, it's always in peaceful mode, because i don't feel like fighting in this game, i'm not in this mood. What i like is exploring, mining, growing, building, not fighting. My next goal is to bring people to fund a village near my base camp.

@nicod_ I used to run an invite only minecraft server that had about six regulars. It was regular mode but I had creepers switched so they didn't destroy player placed blocks and "gravestones" so if you died and found your gravestone you got your inventory back (or it made interesting treasure for others to find)The sense of teamwork was amazing, I marked out a city limits and people built a ton of different builds all in keeping with the a theme. One player spent a month smelting sandstone to build a multi level maze inside a pyramid.I do miss that.

@carbontwelve @nicod_ Wow - that sounds great :-) The server is not running any more, is it? I'm running a small server for my friends and me and things are pretty similar there. But as most of us are already studying or working there is only a small amount of time spent on this server. This gravestone thing also sounds great - is it a spigot/bukkit-plugin or a forge mod?

@mitras2 I believe it was a bucket mod, that’s what I was running back then. The server has long since been down, I recently found a backup of my worlds (it had a plug-in so we could have more than one world with portals) I should find the builds and back then up in world edit or something.@nicod_

@carbontwelveI think what's great about Minecraft is how it lets you choose how you want to play and what's important to you. You can approach it in so many ways 🙂
