"We have developed a risk-based approach to assess the likelihood of modern slavery occurring in our supply chains. This year we have carried out a Review of our network of suppliers and, based on their location and the nature of their business, identified those which we consider might represent a higher risk. We are communicating with those suppliers to notify them of [the companies] obligations under the Modern Slavery Act 2015 (the “Act”) and are requesting certain information and undertakings from those suppliers. "This is a real paragraph in a real service agreement I have to read for my real job.

@_cr0_tab Heaven forbid any company should have a small enough supply chain that they could actually have personal relationships with their suppliers and know for sure whether or not they were using slave labor.

@_cr0_tab It seems to me that slavery has and always will exist in some capacity. Even in science fiction, we often see it. Star Wars had slave trade in the outer planets. Even Firefly mentions slave trade, IIRC.Sad, truly, and we must do everything we can to fight it.

@skynebula @_cr0_tab @garrett Yes, there is a documentary on YouTube by Vice about modern slavery.Fashion is one such industry. I recently came across news of a large fashion chain with this issues, but also see this 2011 news of Zara https://www.theguardian.com/world/2011/aug/18/zara-brazil-sweatshop-accusationIn the Middle East, there are human slave labour in the form of domestic labour. >The human rights group said the kafala sponsorship system, which tied migrants to their employers who acted as their sponsors, meant workers were at an even greater risk of exploitation because they could “revoke sponsorship at will, making them liable to deportation”. It is estimated that around 150,000 migrant female workers are employed under this scheme. International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) president Sharan Burrow last year labelled the migrant workers situation as a form of “modern slavery”, Reuters reported. In the UK, I worked for an organization (specialist medical organization) that trains practitioners how to recognize trafficking victims (ie usually perpetrators will want to go with them if they need to see a doctor, for example).

@hcs To be clear, I've no doubt of the potential for slavery in their (or any) supply chain.I'm specifically calling attention to how impersonal and antiseptic the response of capitalism in general—and corporations in particular—to such a deeply personal and human tragedy is.@skynebula @garrett

@_cr0_tab @garrett @skynebula I don't see how different it is to how a doctor talks about and describes (really tragic practice of) FGM (NSFW term). Some things need to be communicated in a certain way that suits it (ie "Online Corporate Page").
