@lynnesbian the response that bugs me the most is "You do... once when you accept the position and every day after that when you stay at your job."she's a self-identified liberal, and that response sounds a lot a like the "oh you don't like the way this country is? than LEAVE" response a lot of conservatives get

@realmaxkeeble why don't you want to know how upper management makes the decisions that affect you? what do you have to lose by knowing the facts? what do they have to gain by hiding them from you?

@realmaxkeeble also, turning it back around: what is the difference between what he's saying about private orgs and a government? would he be in favor of a tyrannical government the way he is in favor of tyrannically organized business?

@realmaxkeeble i think fundamentally the problem is that people dont think of working in a business as an unequal power relation, but it absolutely is one

@realmaxkeeble well currently the discussion is being discussed in utilitarian terms, about outcomes. You can re-frame the discussion by saying that in both the political and economic realm, it is one's right to have a say in decisions that affect our lives. Regardless of whether or not it leads to "better" outcomes, you ought to have a say in your own life. That's a reasonable right anyone would want

@realmaxkeeble also don't let the implied definition of "good management/leadership" go unchallenged here. He implicitly defines it in terms of The Bottom Line. but that's success in terms of the interests of the owners, not necessarily the interests of the workers. the point of electing your bosses isn't to pick the people best at padding the bottom line, the point is to have a mechanism that encourages management to act in the interests of their employees, because those interests matter and ought to be represented, especially when those interest are antagonistic to the Bottom Line

@thatcosmonaut @gayhobbes @realmaxkeeble I think representative democracy has a place, but if you start from the position that people are stupid - rather than very busy living their lives - your democracy is going to suck shit.

@CJBurger @realmaxkeeble @gayhobbes @thatcosmonaut The fact that this is so pervasive across cultures from what I've gleaned in discussion with people from other cultures is so scary.I honestly wonder if we'll ever break the gravity of it.

@seasharp @realmaxkeeble @gayhobbes @thatcosmonaut unfortunately it's very difficult to break the teenage mentality that people who know less than us are dumb rather than just not as informed about a specific topic. Especially since the former allows us to feel morally superior while the latter requires us to be empathetic to the different ways people choose to live their lives.
