Mastodon: I need your help. I'm in charge of the holiday social trivia, and I want some questions from other religions/culture's winter festival/holy day traditions. I've got @DialMforMara giving me a Jewish question or two, but there are LOTS of societies and religions with winter or solstice events: Are you a member of one? Would you mind giving me a trivia question so any students or partners who are a member of one of these groups can go "I'VE GOT THIS!"? (I can't ask the students) #plsboost

I know that are a few Muslim members of our dept and someone in my lab is a (non-observant) Hindu, so any trivia that makes these people go "I know that!" would be great. (Please boost).

@Canageek @DialMforMara Not my tradition, but one I know a bit about--how many principles are celebrated at Kwanzaa (7). Alternatively ask people to name one or more of the principles.I'm trying to remember any Winter Solstice traditions of the Druidic group I belonged to briefly. We were more focused on the cross-quarter days.

@Canageek @DialMforMara For a pagan-based gimme question, you could ask when Winter Solstice is. Or the significance of the longest night of the year in Northern-European pagan traditions.

@jessmahler @DialMforMara I've been told I have to make them easier so members of other faiths have to have a chance. :SIf you write up a gimmie question I'll see what the team thinks of it!

@Canageek @DialMforMara that Satanism doesn't actually involve worshiping Satan! that the most important of days in the Satanic religion is one's own birthday and the name of the house lavey lived in was the Black Houselet me know if I should think of more! :D

@Canageek @DialMforMara "What day is Winter Solstice?" December 21(It's on most secular calendars, I don't know how to make it more of a gimme...)"What are the colors associated with Kwanzaa?" Green, Red and Black

@Canageek "There is no requirement that a Satanist celebrate any holidays, and there are no hard and fast traditions or rites associated with them. Since Satanism embraces Nature, the other holidays a Satanist might choose to celebrate would be the seasonal turning points marked by the equinoxes and solstices—the dates of which vary from year to year, as well as the mid points between these which can be recognized as the climaxes of each season."

@Canageek just that a Satanist would celebrate the solstice however they wished, like with their own made-up ceremony or just by indulging in something they enjoy

@jessmahler I can put both of those on there. Is there some way to reword that to make it clear that it is a Pagan and Wiccan holy day? (What is the date of a Pagan and Wiccan holy day in winter? Would that be accurate?)

@Canageek Winter Solstice is the name of the holiday for Wiccans and many neo-pagans. There's another winter holiday in February, one of the cross-quarter days, so I'd be leery of asking about a winter holy day. Maybe 'What is the date of a pagan and Wiccan holy day in December?'But there are lots of types of pagan... you could specify neo-pagan I suppose. Or just mention Wicca and not pagan.

@Canageek @DialMforMara KFCThey're not a particularly Christian country, but they wanted to join in with the rest of the world and seemed to choose another Western import to conflate with Christmas. The red and white design and bearded figurehead certainly helped! Most KFCs will get booked out for 25th by the start of November :)

@Canageek @DialMforMara do you have anything on Zwarte Piet (black Peter) from the Netherlands? He's a pretty controversial character at the moment, don't know if he's suitable for the level you wantHe's a Dutch character that follows Santa, with a face "blackened by soot" from going down chimneys. Unfortunately that just translates to a white person wearing blackface and being a comedy sidekick, which is... Problematic...
