       #BrowserWarsI know a lot of people have been saying to use Firefox instead of Chrome or Chromium to fight the monopoly or whatever, but will you really be fighting it if you switch to Firefox? Unless something has changed, Mozilla got 90% of its funding from Google in 2017.

       @poetgrant good question. I've been using Firefox myself because I don't wanna give Google more than I already do and did, but I also sense Firefox isn't exactly the best option here. I'm open for suggestions.

       @eloisa well I know it is Chromium based, but I like Brave. Heck, I really like Chromium for that matter, minus the Googliness. Brave claims to be Chromium frontend without all the Google stuff and with all of Brave's own code.

       @poetgrant @eloisa Brave is a trojan horse farming people's data and attention to fuel a freakin' coin...-_-

       @skynebula @eloisa I haven't seen any data leaks from my system yet. That was actually the first thing I checked since it uses a Chromium frontend. As far as their coin goes, I actually thought it was a great alt idea for funding a website.

       @poetgrant @eloisa I hate coins (but that's not the point here). This way of funding just demolish their nice little pitch about them being the privacy white knights...

       @poetgrant @eloisa "You are not the product"...Ah, in fact you are.This privacy browser was just a bait to make people use it, and then convince them to sell their attention for a scam (sorry, a "token")

       @skynebula @eloisa I could possibly see that, except that it is completely opt-in. I can possibly see it turning 'evil' eventually, but so far the idea behind the token system is very interesting. I doubt it will actually make it to a 1.0 release though. It was not a key selling point of the browser, just an extra 'perk'.

       @trawzified @Matter @oreolek @poetgrant@eloisa @skynebulaI would suggest using a browser based on a sanitized version of the chromium projectsI use the qtwebengine based Qutebrowser and FalkonOh and stay away from electron based front ends unless you have a massive amout of RAM

       @jason @oreolek @poetgrant @eloisa @skynebula @Matter There's also Epiphany, based on WebKitGTK+ but I believe it doesn't fully work with HTML5

       @poetgrantI've always really wanted to like GNOME and the projects around it like Epiphany, but the practical experience has never lived up to the idea.I very much prefer KDE-Plasma.@Matter @skynebula @eloisa @oreolek @trawzified

       @jason as for the GNOME project... I like GTK and the GNOME libs, but I don't really like most of what they produce... I may be trying LXQt soon. I just really miss a pretty desktop.But hot damn Slackware has been blazing fast and extremely easy to use. I never thought it could be this easy to have a Linux that I really enjoy!

       @poetgrantLXqt is definitely worth trying, I tend to use it with a different wm than openbox (Ive not been a fan of openbox since its rebase a few years ago) As you like GTK, Have you tried Afterstep? If not have a go It may appeal to you.

       @jason ah, afterstep hasn't been updated in a while... it is nice for GTK though... it's funny that after all these years GTK hasn't seemed to really changed much.

       @poetgrantDWM is suckless, WMii used to be suckless, but no longer isI included a load of minimal window managers back when I was developing PCLOS-Light Iced-Latte[0] back in my Dev Days [0]https://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,95726.0.htmlI did a dedicated WMii edition before that, and an even more minimal Raw version after

       @eloisa @poetgrant there're no alternatives left. PaleMoon uses Firefox old engine (Gecko) and lives on Patreon scraps [1], the rest is either Webkit (Safari family) or Blink (Chrome family). Dillo, K-Meleon, lynx, w3m are nowhere near painting you the Masto homepage.[1]: https://www.patreon.com/MoonchildProductions

       @oreolek @eloisa @poetgrant I'm doing both.I'm creating a browser UI for elementary OS and the open decentralized web called "Odysseus". With WebKit & Blink (I'm using the former) it's fairly trivial to get started, but there's still plenty of important features like bookmarks, history, and search integration to implement yourself.The problem is Odysseus does not do much browser diversity concerns. As far as webdevs are concerned, it's basically just Safari.

       @oreolek @eloisa @poetgrant So yes, I've just started Memex. I've already got an XHTML parser working well on one particular page!Have no illusions - it won't be able to compete with Blink or even WebKit and Gecko. There'll be way too many broken pages.What it can do is establish a strong alternative vision for the web, get that vision taken more seriously, and hopefully push others to take it further.I will be begging for help with it.
