       @majicDave Also Notepad, which is insane. But there weren't any good cross-platform choices for newbies until recently, and then just Atom. I used to suggest JEdit for new Java coders, but it's intermediate skill at least.

       @mdhughes I do remember that being a problem when I was learning. Hard to set up any kind of basic development environment, and Xcode just wanted you to build a GUI app and throw in a bunch of extra boilerplate stuff.
