When I want to die over and over without the performance anxiety that comes with trying to excel in a competitive multiplayer setting, maybe I should pull something out of the roguelike collection... :blob_cry:

@StarglassRabbit Nah, the game is challenging enough as it is and the "what is" feature means using ascii doesn't really make it any harder!I just got used to ascii since I used to play it on nethack.alt.org so that friends could spectate lolTbh even using spoilers is fair game in nethack

@DetectiveHyde I'll read into it and try to get into it in the next couple days. I'd been dancing around the idea but this is as good a time as any.By the by, what are your thoughts on DCSS, ToME and ADOM if you have experience with them? I'll admit my exposure is really limited and those are the only other "major" roguelikes I know of, so I'll take any other recommendations you got!

@StarglassRabbit I'm afraid I wouldn't know! The only other vaguely roguelike games I've played are two of the Shiren the Wanderer games (the DS remake of the original, and the vita one) and desktop dungeons, both of which I would recommend.Shiren turns the repeated death and failure into a mechanic of progression and uncovering secrets, and features an extensive postgame! Its wandering ronin aesthetic is also SUPERB. Desktop Dungeons distills the roguelike idea to a series of single screen dungeons that function more like puzzles, with a focus on thinking ahead and several mechanics that aid prediction. Don't be fooled by its casual aesthetic, this game is a breaker of men later on.

@StarglassRabbit @DetectiveHyde No. Honestly, I've only ever played with a tileset. Fun game. I was never very good at it, but I enjoyed competing with friends for high scores while at Uni.

@PrismaticMurder @StarglassRabbit What's the furthest you got? I escaped Vlad only to die by falling and crushing a carried cocatrice egg.

@DetectiveHyde Ah, man. Shiren's another I'll need to look at someday. Mystery Dungeon's set a high bar, my friends love the Pokemon-branded ones.I'll pass along my own recommendation for One Way Heroics! It's pretty simple but it also has persistent progression and a really cute aesthetic. It with its OWH+ expansion together goes for around $2.49 during sale periods; there's the original indie game and the Mystery Chronicles spin-off that Chunsoft made; the former is the one I'm talking about

@DetectiveHyde and the one that most other players of OHW prefer. For what it is it has its own wealth of content and unlockables and multiple endings you can go out of your way for. I think you'll enjoy it if you ever get a chance to try it!

@DetectiveHyde @StarglassRabbit I think my top score was like 120k with a Valkyrie. I'm not sanity checking that score, so if it's off by an order of magnitude I wouldn't be surprised.
