I'm curious what is everyone's opinion of etsy? Have you gotten anything really cool from an etsy seller before?

@kelbot as a consumer, I like the abstraction layer of "find neat thing and buy it"As a seller it's kind of a pain to manage. They expect you to be a fairly large operation and the tools are awkward if you have very few items

@kelbot We've had good luck and bad dependent upon the skills of the individual maker.

@DistroJunkie I just looked at my account and I have only ordered a handful of things but they all turned out great.

@wersimmon Oh, cool so you've seen it from both sides. What do you sell on etsy?

@kelbot I've ordered a couple of greeting cards, a pipe, and (no surprises here) some plants. I've been satisfied with every order. As I regularly have more plants than I can find homes for locally, I've considered -- but not yet tired -- selling my extras there.

I was looking for a sleeve to go with the remarkable tablet I'm getting my wife for Christmas and couldn't find anything I was looking for under $90. I found a US based leather maker with something close to what I was looking for and asked if they could customize it. They agreed to what I wanted and at no extra cost even! If it turns out well I may go back to this maker for a custom sleeve for my Thinkpad.

@kelbot I'm a big fan of #statsD, which is an etsy #foss project. That might be a bit different from what you're asking about, but I thought I'd mention it (this being #fosstodon and all!)

@codesections Neat! That's pretty awesome that etsy is releasing open source projects!

@kelbot I actually got my wedding ring on Etsy. I got the wrong size initially and I had a really good experience with the seller to get the right size. Now, my wife's ring, that's a whole different story....
