If you ever regain consciousness and are unsure where you are, just look in the nearest refrigerator:- shelf stable condiments?- bread?- eggs and butter?- potato chips?Yep, this is an American refrigerator. You're still free.

@feld Wait wait wait. Americans putting fucking potato chip sin the fridge? Why would you do that?Eggs and butter, though, I get. We process our eggs the same way in Canada and so they must be refrigerated. And butter, well, I keep my butter dish on the counter, but it's small and doesn't hold an entire stick of butter, so the remainder stays in the fridge until I'm ready to use it.I may be taking your post too seriously.

@ink_slinger I have seen people put potato chips in the fridge, yes.Butter -- unless you live in a climate that gets really warm I usually have at least a stick of butter out. It gets used faster than it can absorb smells or go rancid. I have a nice butter crock too, but I forget to use it.Eggs -- yeah, our egg processing is stupid and they wouldn't have to be refrigerated if we weren't so terrified of a little detritus. If you can get fresh eggs you can leave them out for weeks.Fun fact, you can eat raw eggs in the Denmark with no concern (or even raw chicken -- like the Japanese chicken sashimi). They don't have salmonella. If any farm is tested positive the entire flock is eliminated.

@ink_slinger @feld Yea our eggs have the cuticle washed off to reduce risk of salmonella contamination so you gotta refrigerate them, but round where I am lots of folk don't refrigerate any of that stuff - though i do keep a few loafs of bread in the freezer for if i forget to get some at the store

@emsenn If we just enacted the same policy as Denmark for chickens we'd have zero salmonella and we could have raw eggs and chicken.

@feld salmonella exists in chicken meat so there's no processing beside cooking and radiation (as far as i know) to decontaminate it.But yea europe should really wash their eggs!

@emsenn Denmark doesn't wash their eggs. They require strict testing and entire extermination of flocks that may have salmonella. As a result, they're salmonella free for about 25 years now and people can eat raw chicken and eggs without concern.

@emsenn @feld Putting bread in the fridge makes it dry out and go stale faster. But, yeah, I'll often have bread in the freezer...certain kinds I only use for toast, so I never bother to thaw it out and just take a couple slices out and put them directly into the toaster when I want toast.

@feld I had no idea that raw chicken was a thing people ate on purpose. Personally, it sounds awful, but I felt the same way about sushi until I actually tried it.

@feld Honestly, even the worry about "a little detritus" is silly because you're right that it's "a little" at best. I never saw any crap or feathers on the eggs in European grocery stores. They looked just as clean as the ones sold over here, except they didn't need to be refrigerated.

@feld In conclusion, putting chips in the fridge is bad and wrong and wastes valuable space for things that actually need to be kept cold.

@feld oh, my goodness, no. Potato chips go on top of the fridge. The fancy chip dip you make when company comes over, you know by stirring dry soup mix in sour cream?, that goes in the fridge
