Lady friend of mine was on the phone with one of her lady friends the other night. Somehow, it was revealed that Lady Friend's Lady Friend uses NetBSD.WHO ARE YOU, CHARLOTTE?! 😀

My gut says that if you're into *nix on your desktop, there's a significant chance you reside in the fediverse somewhere.

@deadsuperhero Agreed, but any explanation for the corollary: why are so many on the Fediverse using a non-free OS?

@deadsuperhero I'm not into romantic comedies, but if I were, I would image they would start something like this.

@fitheach @deadsuperhero They aren't techies and don't have techie friends.

@starbreaker Ooh, they are techies, some of them are quite well known techies, even programmers.I could out them, but that might not be fair. 😃 @deadsuperhero

@fitheach @deadsuperhero In my case, a mix of gaming, and the fact that I tend to have serious issues running GNU/Linux on my laptops.

@projektir I choose ThinkPads because I *know* that I will be able to run GNU/Linux on them. I start from the premise that I want to run a free OS & apps, then choose my hardware.A decade, or more, ago it was trickier finding laptops that could run GNU/Linux without issue. I've not encountered the same problems in recent times. For those who don't want to spend time researching there are suppliers like System76 and Purism.@deadsuperhero

@fitheach I avoid Thinkpads due to their history with Superfish... I got a Razer laptop here as they seemed to be Linux friendly at the time, but now I'm struggling to put Arch on it, even though it seemed fine 2 years ago. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@projektir Superfish was a Lenovo lowpoint, for sure. However, if the first thing you do when getting a ThinkPad is to wipe the disc and install GNU/Linux, then it wasn't a problem.I've never encountered Razer laptops before. Which part of the Arch install failed?

@fitheach Razer is an interesting case. They're gamer laptops and they fulfill that function very well. Sadly, seems their Linux support is not as good as promised. The problems I've encountered are roughly the same as this person's: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=234701rcu_preempt/watchdog issues. Can't start X, etc.

@projektir Hmmm, that user had a working system with an old SSD, but not the new one. Perhaps it was a problem with the SSD.If it was me I'd try with a Live CD or image on a USB stick and see what happens. Knoppix normally works well for this purpose.
