Watching Martyrs (2008) really helped me cement what I believe in the horror genreBy showing such extreme violence matter-of-factly, the movie doesn't condemn or praise. It just shows what horror is as a genre, without the bagage of slasher movies where you actively look forward to the body count. It's like a French proto-Cabin in the WoodsIt answers "Why do we like horror movies?" by giving a non-answer. The point is already made through actions (film). It's better not to know "why".

But for what it's worth, diegesis-wise, the violence that Anna undergoes has the goal of trying to understand the human condition better. They're trying to figure out the afterlife (or maybe lack thereof). For me, it's the answer to "Why do we make horror movies", or any horror medium in generalIt's a genre rooted in deeply negative emotions, so it's a genre that's rooted in what's negative about us. By pushing negativity into horror, we can study it at face value

It's easy to talk about the troubles of, say, growing up in a patriarchal society where you feel unsafe and the world refuses to see why, but Halloween (2018) makes it into a realityIt's easy for us white folks to be all like "Racism is bad!!", but it takes a movie like Get Out (2017) for some people's dogmatic sympathy to transform into genuine empathyAll that to say that horror is extremely important for us as a species and I'm tired of the trend of horror being looked down upon

@oxyhime goddamnit y'all I can't believe I have to explain this, this is 9th grade philosophy, for society to exist patriarchy AND matriarchy have to be present at the same time, the constant rivalry of the two opposites' struggle for power makes the world go 'round, (See; Taoism). If we'd be in a "patriarchal society" women would be used as sex slaves, every country would be at war with the other and noone would get anywhere.
