*sonic developers voice* let's create a game based around speed and then force the player to slow down continuously with spring traps, puzzles, moving platforms, underwater sections, minigames,

@lynnesbian I lowkey hate that series for exactly this reason. It's extremely fitting that you spend half the game as a blue ball.

@lynnesbian agree, sonic was a malformed concept and yet somehow they made dozens of these games...

@lynnesbian during the Sonic 4 days there was funny discourse in the Sonic community about the original Sonic games not being about going fast.

@lynnesbian I feel like the "designed around speed" was a marketing gimmick, honestly. The actual game doesn't have much to do with it, but it's still one of the best platformers I've ever played 😊

@lynnesbian to be fair to them, green hill zone is the perfect level because how well it fits into this all with speed and rewarding good speed control. On the contrary, sonic CD is a dope game but a whole machanic is about 'back to the future'ing yourself with speed but they intentionally make this really fucking hard with no room and obstacles everywhere. If I wanted precision platforming, I wouldn't be playing sonic. And don't get me started on chemical plant zone...

@CornishRepublicanArmy i'm so conflicted about chemical plant zone because it has such a good soundtrack and aesthetic but the design sucks ass

@lynnesbian I KNOW. It's so good. For one there's purple everywhere, which we all know is the best colour. On the whole the all over the place structure is actually cool imo. But that fucking purple liquid and the moving staircase ruins it, literally had panic attacks due to nearly drowning all the time in the level as a kid

@lynnesbian @CornishRepublicanArmy i am pretty sure chemical plant zone heavily contributed to my issues with water

@lynnesbian Sonic is the only 2D-Platformer series where i found the level design utterly incomprehensible. For me it always boild down to "move vaguely from left to right and hope for the best". Maybe that was the point (deliberatly diverging from Marios carefully designed worlds) but i just found it confusing and - worse - unmemorable.
