Animaniacs was really just a way for Spielberg to get his fursonas drawn

anyways, my solicited Animaniacs take is that as fun as the show was and as fondly remembered it is, its target audience was Steven Spielberg and nobody else. No child would understand the adult humor (again, just about every episode had a Goodfellas parody. The pilot episode had a whole Hercule Poirot parody), adults would be put off by the slapstick and the constant show biz references and that incredibly annoying Jerry Lewis impression that only Spielberg thinks is funny.

@kelsey It's really hard to watch now because it doesn't appeal to adults, especially ones who, like, don't have an encyclopedic knowledge of Clinton-era pop culture and show business.

@BestGirlGrace And yet, despite half the jokes going over my head as a kid who hadn't seen any of the movies being referenced, I don't think I'd like it more now that I'm old/nearly culturally aware enough to understand them.I feel like that might even make it worse. haha

@deserthag Right? As a kid, it's hard because there are these things that feel like jokes, but you don't get them because they're jokes about Bill Clinton and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Going back as an adult, most of the jokes are old and cliche or at least outdated. It's not really fun to watch except for a few really good sketches (Who's On Stage)

Every Minerva Mink sketch was about her being sexy at or near a guy until his eyes popped out of his head and made that awooga noise.

@BestGirlGrace Yeah. I mean, when 90% of the humor is references aimed at people a full decade minimum older than your target audience, who is the show even for at that point? Getting older and understanding the jokes only made that show more confusing to me.Pinky and the Brain were funny though.

@deserthag Yeah, the good ones got their own spin-off series or are at least fondly remembered. Enough that it's easy to forget that so much of the show was... pointlessly adult.

@shadow8t4 There's multiple references to her being so horny, they had to cut or tone down her scenes from the show.

@BestGirlGrace Oh yeah, it's mostly unwatchable at this point. It was like... pointlessly adult in a way that probably didn't even appeal to adults at the time, and it was usually in a time slot where parents weren't really watching with their kids anyway.I feel like Tiny Toon Adventures did a lot of the same stuff, but not as intensely. I feel like it aged pretty poorly for a lot of the same reasons, too, though.

@deserthag I'd be interesting to see how much creative control Spielberg had with each of the shows he ran at the time (Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, Freakazoid, Tiny Toons) and compare to how well they aged. Freakazoid probably aged the best, but it has some hard to watch parts (There's a joke about how scary it would be if Sinbad got another TV show and the characters scream for like a full minute. And, of course, that Jerry Lewis impression).

@deserthag He's probably enjoying being 62 years old and having a family, haunted only by the time Freakazoid made fun of him for having a bad TV show, apparently

@BestGirlGrace I can't even remember what his comedy was like. I vaguely remember it being kinda doofy and aimed pretty squarely at kids, though?Which reminds me that Dave Coulier existed.

@deserthag Yeah, Sinbad was kinda before my time, so I have no opinion on him. Which means that a minute-long joke about how bad he is doesn't mean anything to me.
