It's fascinating how the streaming revolution transformed itself back into what is basically cable TV.

Okay, okay, there are way fewer ads, and you can rewind and fast-forward and pick anything you want out of a library.BUT OTHER THAN THAT, EVERYTHING IS BREAKING UP BACK INTO DISTINCT DISTRIBUTION CHANNELS

@deadsuperhero as long as capitalism has a firm grasp on centralised media, the pattern will continue no matter what the medium.

@ctrlaltdog and so, pirate operations become more elaborate over time.True story: SWIM has access to a Plex instance that's basically a giant database of ripped shows and films. Some automation is set up to put up new episodes with the correct metadata attached. There's over 200 people using it.

@deadsuperhero I am just waiting for the cable companies to relaunch as pure streaming services then advertise using some tone-deaf slogan like: "It's not cable... It's Comcast!"

@kitsuneflame @deadsuperhero The last time I had a Netflix subscription was when they shipped DVDs to your house. I never paid for it either; just did the two months free. Today I still torrent a lot of my media. I'll still buy CDs at shows and from Bandcamp, and I'll buy games just because I don't want to run executable code from something I get off a dodgy torrent site. There is a lot of content I have that isn't available on streaming. Even with games, I don't own copies, I own a license.

@djsumdog > There is a lot of content I have that isn't available on streaming.Yeah, a lot of my favorite things were only local limited releases or available through BandCamp.

@deadsuperhero I'd dig into the details, but they're too nuanced for a reply.Let's just say the only thing that streaming changed was removing the cable middleman clearinghouse.

@deadsuperhero There interesting possibility with streaming though, is greater interaction.
