trying to discuss nuances of racial categorization in japan with someone on ircand this person, refuses to actually comprehend the question we're asking, and states that japan views only two races, japanese, and non-japaneseme: "ok so the term 白人 exists. it means white person. what does that mean to someone who is native to japan? is that going to be equivalent to the way the term is viewed in the western world?"him: *sends link to a "how to read chinese characters" guide*

Funny how he's explaining one word when you asked about the meaning of another.I find it very hard to believe that Japan wouldn't have an implied hierarchy of people according to ethnicity, with Japanese at the top, white people near the top, Koreans at the bottom, and Chinese, Indians, Pakistani, Filipinos and Indonesians in some ordering in the middle. Based on what I've heard and read, and based on my experiences in Hong Kong, which isn't too far away and pretty strongly influenced by Japan.I get the impression from anime and from the wonderful Gaijin Smash/Cronicles that they can have a super prejudiced but favorable view of black Americans, soI assume black people would be treated very differently depending on if they're black Americans or black Africans.

@ky0ko I can say this, I had have mutliple Filipino-American friends hit Japan- and because of their skin color, a lot of Japanese refuse to believe they are actually Americans.
