I've said it before and I'll say it again: people wouldn't be expecting the iPad Pro to be a full laptop replacement if they believed the Mac's future was assured, safe, and sound.

@baldur I am not sure what you mean, can you explain more?

@Alonealastalovedalongthe Current reviews of the iPad Pro are pretty unanimous in praising its hardware while saying that its OS limits it from being a productive device. It's clearly being presented by Apple as the future of general computing in a period where Apple seems to be cutting down on its investment in the Mac (no dedicated macOS team, more sporadic updates). So Apple clearly expects the iPad Pro to be a mac replacement _someday_ and it's being reviewed on those terms today.

Put another way: Apple clearly believes that the future of general computing is the iPad─eventually it will replace the Mac.And because it's already under-investing in the Mac (no dedicated macOS team, more sporadic updates) the iPad Pro is being reviewed on those terms today

@baldur Yah and what is the basic difference between a surface and an ipad? Control over the user.

@Alonealastalovedalongthe Yeah. Pretty much that exactly.

@baldur I suspect this is also why Microsoft is investing so heavily in the Surface Pro and the fancy keyboard that optionally comes with it.I'm only really seeing Samsung making compelling Android equivalents. The future however is kind of dark because these devices have locked bootloader and non-free binary blobs for essential functions.

If people believed that the Mac had a solid future, they'd review the iPad Pro for what it is: a great device dedicated to a specific computing paradigm.Instead it's being reviewed as a device that needs to cover all of the paradigms needed for productive and creative work.

@bobstechsite Yeah, it would be _really_ interesting to see what sort of experiments you could make with that sort of hardware and free OSes.Which is why I'm glad that Google is also playing in this sandbox with the Pixel Slate and ChromeOS. Very glad that it's not just a race between Windows and iOS.

@baldur The thing that really bothers me about tablets and phones is that their design philosophy is rooted in consumption. They aren't tools that encourage you to create and say "what if?". I know that sounds vague, but when I got a raspberry pi and set it up it gave me this distinct feeling of empowerment. It made me feel like I can make and build things and I can understand technology.1/2

@baldur Terrifying that the macs seem to be less and less loved. Where's my "it just works" desktop going to come from in the future?I'd love it if it were Linux but... no love for UX, a fetish for dependency tree package management...

@johnribbon Yeah. What bothers me is that because of Apple's obsession with secrecy it's impossible for us as users to distinguish between "don't worry, this is just a bad patch and the Mac will get better" and "we don't care about the Mac anymore and really want you to switch to iPads".
