@mastohost when logged in (browser) I never get previews of other users's toots / followers when I'm not following them. (I do get those previews by checking their full profile) Is that an admin setting somewhere or is that intentional behaviour?

@dries That is an intentional behaviour. Your instance will only display toots from users someone in your instance follows. Even then the profile may be missing toots from before that user was followed.

@mastohost okay, I get the reasoning - guess I expected that when a profile is 'public' their toots would be visible from anywhere in the fediverse. But as I understand it now, I need to explicitly visit their public profile page on their instance to view that info.

@dries Yep, that's it. Having all public profiles copied over to your instance to be able to display them would require enormous system resources.
