@glyph @lynnesbian i'll bet a million MineCoins that they don't sell the coins in anything close to the increments that you spend them in, locking you in to buying more b/c you already have *some* but not enough to get another thing. hot dog bun theory

@lynnesbianWhich means now they can better hide the amount you're actually paying in order to trick people into paying more. Not to mention there's the whole "buy 10 coins minimum, but need 11 coins to get this one thing" that encourages excess spending. If I wanted to buy a couch, I wouldn't spend twice as much as it costs just to get enough of their proprietary currency that can only be used on their products in order to get it, so why tf is it legal for mobile devs?

@lynnesbianBetter question: Why are they "premium" in the first place? Are they significantly better quality than the free ones out there? It's not like they use more pixels than the others or anything.Under a truly "free market", they'd be forced to lower their prices to match the competition (the free skins) which means this market isn't "free". It's rigged in favor of them.

microtransactions have ruined the gaming industry. expansion packs were usually good, although they were sometimes shitty. then came DLC, which is, in my opinion, terrible, but there are good DLCs.and then microtransactions happened.there were warning signs when you had to buy Microsoft Points™ to purchase games on xbox arcade but then it became worsebut now it's so common for games to offer in-game currency purchaseswelcome to modern gaming babey

@fradleybox @lynnesbian to be honest even if Microsoft dropped support for the java edition, its modding community is too big for it to die. Like I can play a heavily modded version of minecraft from four years ago and get a good 100+ hours out of it now. That version will always be available regardless of Microsofts support.

hmm minecoins remind me of something but i can't quite remember whatoh oops i accidentally copy-pasted something oopsiesThe Microsoft Points system was criticized for being deceptive in terms of actual real-world cost, as well as for users often having to purchase more points at once than those which are immediately needed. In his review of the Zune, Paul Thurrott argued that "a song on Zune typically costs 79 Microsoft Points, which, yes, is about 99 cents. But it seems to be less because it's just 79 Points."[5] Walter Mossberg also noted that "to buy even a single 99 cent song from the Zune store, you have to purchase blocks of "points" from Microsoft, in increments of at least $5. You can’t just click and have the 99 cents deducted from a credit card, as you can with iTunes. So, even if you are buying only one song, you have to allow Microsoft to hold on to at least $4.01 of your money until you buy another."

@lynnesbian So yeah, agreed, but also there's actually more of a point to this resurgence of faux-currency stuff in games: They're cross-platform, so you can get around the other platform holders dumb bs about "you bought this digital thing elsewhere so you can't have it here you'd have to rebuy it", cos you're buying the currency, and redeeming it for the thing?Capitalism uwu

@lynnesbian I think they'd end up being not-crossplatform if they did it like that because of the platform holders rules, like how the currencies are locked to the platform you buy them on. It's just a weird workaround around these dumb rules

But instead the V-Bucks you buy are locked to the platform you bought them on, whereas ones you unlock in game are cross-platform?

@lynnesbian I'm not certain cos the platform's rules are NDAed obviously, but I'm relatively confident it's not multiple developers making a bad decision, but instead them working around the dumb policies that the platform holders have put in place on their storeshttps://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2018-06-19-ex-sony-dev-says-ps4-console-cross-platform-block-is-all-about-the-money

@lynnesbian Basically! I guess I'm just slightly over-sensitive to the "these devs are being crappy" as a student gamedev, when it's more of a "these stores are being crappy" issue. I'm very sure the devs hate this crap as much as the customers

@lynnesbian The addition of Minecraft Bux™ is a real shame, but this isn't really anything new, they've done this since the Xbox 360 version came outBack then it was sad to see them do it, but it was just kinda acceptedThe normal version of minecraft is written in Java, so it runs like total ass even on good PCsThis new version is written in a sane programming language so it runs GREATBut it's only on NSA10, and locked down like hellWe now have two imperfect versions of Minecraft

@lynnesbian To be 1000% honest, I never got into modding minecraft anyways because back when I would they'd update it and then getting the mods working on the new version again would be hellThe real bad thing for me is the fucking Minecraft Bux™It's a shame that they carried over what they did on the 360 version to all the versionsIt takes a lot of the creativity out of the game for sure
