Hey computer users from when you used a commandline for everything because that was that: how did you run multiple programs at once?I'm asking for the context. By the time I got to it, I could open a "terminal window". Were virtual consoles used? Something more like screen? Wait, wait! Did you just pipe stuff to stuff?!

@maiki multiple consoles in Linux, I'm pretty sure they always had them. I don't recall them not being there and I ran some pretty ancient versions of Linux. Unless you're talking about c64 times which were single window only.

I have so many terminals open at once, I sometimes wonder how far back I could go and keep this workflow. I never multitasked in MS-DOS, just launched an app.

@maiki A lot of alternate x86 DOS clones specialized in multitasking before Microsoft crushed them, by leveraged windows to be only compatible with their DOS. PC-MOS was one such example that went GPL a couple years ago. Some versions of DR-DOS spring to mind.TSR progs like borland sidekick also tried to fill in the gap for non multitasking DOSes.

@trashHeap @maiki I loved almost everything Borland made. Used to work pretty close to one of their offices in Novato. I loved Turbo-<everything>

@xmanmonk Yes. I need to be distracted. I've shat my PJs in pre-election terror and need the chill happy Wasabi vibes.
